Dirtbags Split Doubleheader with Cal State Fullerton

After falling 11-3 in game one, the Dirtbags bounced back with a huge 14-4 victory in game two.
FULLERTON, Calif. – Long Beach State (22-15, 20-14 BWC) split their Saturday doubleheader with Cal State Fullerton (20-29, 13-17 BWC). Game one went to the Titans, 11-3, while the Dirtbags bounced back to take game two, 14-4, backing a dominant performance from Marques Johnson.
Just as they did in game one of the series, the Dirtbags wasted no time getting on the board in the first. A Chase Luttrell single gave LBSU a two-out baserunner and the sophomore would come around to score on a Calvin Estrada RBI single.
Brennan Rozell got another rally going in the second with a one-out single into center. Toren Craig followed with a double down the right field line and an RBI groundout plated the second Dirtbag run of the ballgame.
The Titans tied things up in the bottom half on a two-RBI triple, but Long Beach State answered immediately manufacturing a run in the third to reclaim the lead.
Unfortunately, Fullerton rallied in the fifth with four runs on back-to-back doubles to take the lead and blew the game open in the eighth plating five runs to make it an 11-3 ballgame.
Long Beach State struggled offensively after the third inning as Fullerton brought in their usual Friday night ace, Tanner Bibee. The right-hander surrendered just three hits in 4.1 innings of work against the Dirtbags.

For the third straight game, Long Beach State got on the board in the first inning as they began game two of the doubleheader with a three-spot. Charlie Loust singled through the left side to plate the first run followed by a two-RBI single from Chris Jimenez.
Kokx continued his hot-hitting at Goodwin Field smoking a double off the wall in left-center in the second inning. Toren Craig scored easily on the play giving the Dirtbags a four-run lead. The Dirtbag center fielder is 6-for-12 (.500) so far this weekend.
The Titans broke through in the second with two runs on three hits to end the shutout and cut the LBSU lead in half.
Both teams exchanged runs in the third inning with the Dirtbags taking advantage of a Fullerton error, but the Titans would make it a one-run game with a run in the fourth.
After being held in check in the top half of the fourth, Long Beach State went on to score a run in each of the final five innings, including a solo home run from Estrada in the fifth and a solo shot from Chase Luttrell in the eighth.
The best story of game two had to be right-handed pitcher Marques Johnson. Entering the weekend, the RCC transfer had just nine innings pitched with seven strikeouts. He went on to toss four scoreless innings allowing just one hit and a pair of walks while striking out eight Titans.
The Dirtbags scored in eight of the nine innings in the 14-4 victory. They have never scored a run in all nine innings in program history.
Toren Craig and Chase Luttrell both had a tremendous day at the plate. Luttrell went 5-for-9 with a double, triple, home run, five runs scored, and a pair of RBI while Craig went 4-for-8 with three doubles, two runs scored, and a RBI.
The Dirtbags and Titans will wrap up the series tomorrow at Goodwin Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
