Rivalry Renewed, Dirtbags Head to Cal State Fullerton This Weekend

The next chapter of the Long Beach State-Cal State Fullerton rivalry will be written this weekend.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State hits the road to take on rival Cal State Fullerton this weekend at Goodwin Field.

LAST TIME OUT
• The Dirtbags won their second straight series taking three games against CSU Bakersfield and have now won eight of their last nine games.
• Johnathan Lavallee had another dominant showing on Friday night posting eight innings of one-run ball while striking out 12 leading the 'Bags to a 5-1 victory.
• Alfredo Ruiz stayed hot on the mound with eight shutout innings with Matt Fields closing it out for the 5-0 shutout in game two.
• Game three of the series was a pitchers' dual that went the way of the 'Runners, 2-1, snapping the Dirtbags winning streak.
• Long Beach State walked it off in the finale thanks to Connor Kokx's solo shot in the tenth for the 3-2 game four, and series, victory.
ABOUT THE DIRTBAGS
• The Dirtbags won their second straight series and now sport a 21-14 overall record and sit in third place in the Big West standings with a 19-13 league play record
• Long Beach State's offense struggled a bit last weekend, but still ranks fifth with a .278 average and have moved up to third with a .432 slugging percentage. Their 32 home runs is fourth-most in the conference.
• On the mound, the pitching staff had another phenomenal weekend allowing just five runs in four games against CSUB. Their 3.94 team ERA is third-best in the Big West while their .228 opponent average paces the field. Their 311 striekouts in league play rank second-most, 12 behind UCSB.
• Defensively, the Dirtbags had a near perfect weekend, bumping their fielding percentage to .978. That mark ranks third best in the Big West.
SCOUTING THE TITANS
• Cal State Fullerton is in the midst of their worst season in program history with a 19-28 record. They sit in ninth place in the Big West with a 12-16 league play record.
• The Titans are coming off being swept by Cal Poly, have lost seven straight, and have just one win in the month of May.
• CSF ranks in the bottom third of the league slashing .263/.345/.363 averaging 4.6 runs per game. Caden Connor leads the team in just about every category, including a .331 average and .404 OBP. His 55 hits ranks ninth-most in the Big West.
• The Titan pitching staff has a team ERA of 5.87, fourth-highest in the league, to go along with a .291 opponent average. Tanner Bibee leads the way with a 3.39 ERA in 82.1 innings, but is not expected to pitch this weekend. Gavin Kennedy has the next lowest ERA at 3.86, but has only thrown 11.2 innings.
• Fullerton leads the rivalry 158-97 and has won seven of the last eight meetings, including four-straight.
