Name, Image, and Likeness, or "NIL," refers to a student-athlete's ability to earn compensation from third parties for the use of the student-athlete’s name, image or likeness. Compensation must be in exchange for work actually performed, the total value of the compensation must fall within the student-athletes designated range of compensation; and third parties must meet the definition of possessing a Valid Business Purpose.

A: Yes, third party providers can partner with as many student-athletes as they would like. Please check out the Long Beach Local Exchange to offer a NIL deal to any of our student-athletes. Â
Q: I am a donor, and I would like to support Beach student-athlete NIL, where do I start?
- Register with the Long Beach Local Exchange to connect with our student-athletes and pitch them a deal. Please keep in mind that the total compensation value paid to student-athletes for the use of their NIL must fall within the student-athletes' designated range of compensation. Further, all NIL activities, third party entities must meet the definition of containing a Valid Business Purpose (Third Party must sell a good or service to the public for a profit, or be a bona fide nonprofit).

A: Student-Athletes may not enter a NIL contract to receive compensation for the promotion or endorsement of any product or service that violated NCAA legislation. This includes but is not limited to the following:
- Gambling
- Sports betting
- Alcohol
- Tobacco
- Marijuana
- Controlled and Banned substances
- Any product or service that conflicts with LBSU, the Big West Conference and the NCAA mission and values.
- Any product or service that adversely reflects on the University or the Athletics department
A: Yes, with restrictions. Engaging in NIL activities is subject to rules and regulations that are associated to the student’s particular visa status. For international students who would like to get involved in their NIL, please contact the NIL staff and/or the LBSU Center for International education (CIE).

Long Beach State Athletics recently hosted an interactive Name, Image and Likeness (NIL), branding, and media workshop designed to equip student-athletes with the tools to build their personal brands and prepare for success beyond competition. Throughout the workshop, student-athletes participated in hands-on activities focused on identifying authentic NIL opportunities and strengthening their professional presence. Members of the women's soccer, men's basketball, and women's basketball teams brainstormed brands and organizations that aligned with their personal interests, explored partnerships with local Long Beach businesses they already know and support, practiced media interview skills through mock press conferences, and evaluated one another's social media profiles to better understand how their online presence shapes their personal brand. By encouraging student-athletes to think strategically about community engagement, communication, and personal branding, the workshop highlighted how NIL extends far beyond endorsement opportunities. These experiences help student-athletes develop valuable professional skills while fostering meaningful connections within the Long Beach community. The workshop is one example of Long Beach State Athletics' commitment to providing a holistic student-athlete experience. Through innovative NIL education, career readiness programming, and personal development initiatives, Long Beach State empowers student-athletes to maximize opportunities during their collegiate careers while preparing them for success long after graduation. |
