LONG BEACH-- Second baseman Kurt Wideman could not field a hard chopper by Shane Peterson, allowing the winning run to score from second in the bottom of the ninth, as No. 25-ranked Long Beach State (25-15, 7-4 Big West) won a slugfest, 14-13, to win the series with visiting Pacific (8-30, 2-12 Big West) on a warm Saturday afternoon.
The Dirtbags, who scored five runs in the eighth inning to take a 13-10 lead, once trailed the contest 10-6 after five innings. And even after lead in the ninth, the Dirtbags watched reliever Nick Vincent give up three runs in the ninth to make it 13-13.
In the bottom of the ninth, Jason Tweedy's led off the inning with a single, before being sacrificed to second off of reliever David Rowse (0-3). Peterson then hit a ball to the right side of the infield that Wideman could not field, allowing the go-ahead run to score for the second-straight inning.
Jason Corder ignited the five-run eighth inning with his second home run of the contest, a three-run shot to centerfield to make it 12-10. Travis Howell followed with an RBI triple to give LBSU a three-run lead, after relievers Adam Wilk and Brett Lorin allowed just two hits following Pacific's 10-6 lead in the fifth.
LBSU inched back over the latter innings with a run in the sixth, followed by a solo home run by Rylan Sandoval (2) in the seventh and a leadoff triple and groundout to start the eighth. Sandoval, starting for the first time at third base, finished with three hits, as did Corder, Danny Espinosa and Jason Tweedy.
Eight runs over the fourth and fifth innings gave Pacific a 10-6 lead.
A five-run fourth inning chased starter Vance Worley from the contest and gave the Tigers a 7-6 advantage, before reliever David Roberts gave up three more runs in the fifth to make it 10-6.
Mark McCain went the first 5.2 innings, giving up seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits for Pacific, as LBSU staked them selves to a 6-2 lead.
Corder connected on his 10th home run of the season, making it 6-2 in the third, as he is the first Dirtbag since Evan Longoria in 2006 to hit double digits, and just the second player since 2002 to reach 10. His 18 career home runs is ninth all-time.
An Espinosa two-run single in the first made it 2-0, before an error by third baseman Mike Walker opened the door to three runs in the second to make it 5-2.
The series finale is Sunday at 1 p.m. with LBSU continuing play next weekend at UC Davis for a three-game series, taking Tuesday off for the first time this season.
