The Beach will have a rematch against No. 2 Stanford and No. 3 USC.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 10 Long Beach State (6-2) will play at the MPSF Invite hosted by California this weekend. The Beach comes from a 3-1 record at home where they won their matches against Westcliff, Biola and No. 18 Brown on Saturday and lost to No. 2 Stanford on Sunday.
The Beach will start the MPSF Invite against the only teams they lost to in this season so far. On Friday, the team will face the Cardinal for the second time in a row at 2 p.m. and then play No. 3 USC for the second time this season as well on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Later on Saturday, the Beach will have their first match up against a Big West team, playing No. 12 UC Davis at 4:30 p.m. to close day two of the tournament. The matchup of the final game Sunday will depend on the results of the previous day.
This past weekend, Freshman Corbin Stanley led the team scoring four goals in the loss against the Cardinals and is leading the team with 16 so far in the season. The center has also an impressive shot efficiency of 80% in his first eight games for the Beach.
Another freshman that had immediate impact on the team is Spanish center Gabi Acosta. Acosta did not play at the Triton Invite due to international competition with Team Spain, where they earned a bronze medal at the U19 European Championship. This past weekend, the center had his debut for the Beach and scored nine goals, one assist, four steals and earned five ejections in three games.
In cage, seniors Aaron Wilson and Liam Ward continue to split time to help the Beach defense. Both have 36 saves each, and Wilson leads the team in steals with 12 as well as helping with 7 assists so far. Ward played on the loss against the Cardinals and had 7 saves while Wilson had a season-high of 11 saves against No. 18 Brown. Also making an impact for the team is Sophomore Marc Frigola with 13 goals second in the team behind Stanley, and Senior Bruno Chiappini who leads the team in points (25), scoring 11 goals and notching 14 assists so far.
