Men’s Water Polo Opens MPSF Invite With A Loss Against No. 2 Stanford

The Beach will face No. 3 USC and No.12 UC Davis on Saturday.
BERKELEY, Calif. – No. 10 Long Beach State lost their first game of four at the MPSF Invite hosted by Cal on Friday, falling in a rematch with No. 2 Stanford as the Cardinal pulled away from the Beach in the fourth quarter.
Stanford (7-0) got things started in the game with senior Dash McFarland scoring on a extra player opportunity, but Long Beach State (6-3) answered quickly with back-to-back goals by freshmen Gabi Acosta and Corbin Stanley to put the Beach in the lead 2-1. The Cardinal recovered with three straight goals, but a second goal in the quarter by Acosta had the Beach trailing by one, 4-3 at the end of the first.
Senior Evan Cain tied the game on a penalty shot to open the scoring in the second quarter, but Stanford remained in the lead with back-to-back goals, and led at the half 8-5.
The Beach started the second half with sophomore Marc Frigola getting on board in the first possession of the quarter. Cain scored two more goals in the quarter to keep the difference by one. Senior Bruno Chiappini then scored his first goal of the weekend at the end of the quarter to once again bring the Beach back within one, trailing 10-9 at the end of three.
Stanford held Long Beach State scoreless in the fourth, though, and pulled away for a 14-10 victory on Friday. Evan Cain led the Beach on offense with three goals, followed by Gabi Acosta and Marc Frigola with a pair of goals. Bruno Chiappini, Alec Johnson and Corbin Stanley scored one goal each.
Long Beach State will have a doubleheader tomorrow as they play No. 3 USC at 11:30 a.m. and No. 12 UC Davis at 4:30 p.m. Both games will be played at the Legends Aquatic Center in Berkeley, Calif. and can be watched live on overnght.com and stats on scores.6-8sports.com.
