Men’s Water Polo Hosts Four Games On Opening Weekend

Long Beach State will play three games Saturday before hosting No. 2 Stanford on Sunday.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center will have a busy weekend of water polo as No. 10 Long Beach State will play four games to open their home schedule. On Saturday, the Beach will play three games starting with Westcliff at 11:30 a.m. followed by Biola at 2:30 p.m. and ending the day against No. 18 Brown at 6 p.m. The biggest test of the weekend will be against No. 2 Stanford on Sunday at Noon.
 
The Beach started the season at the Triton Invitational and finished with a 3-1 record. Centers Alec Johnson and Corbin Stanley led the team with 9 goals each. Stanley had an impressive debut for the Beach as the only player to score in all games. Both Johnson and Stanley scored career highs of five goals against Westcliff and Redlands, respectively. In defense, seniors Liam Ward and Aaron Wilson split time in the cage with both making penalty saves during the weekend. Wilson leads the team in steals after recording seven this past weekend, while Senior Bruno Chiappini is the leader in assists.
 
On Saturday the first game for the Beach will be against Westcliff - a rematch of the first game of the season where Long Beach State won 20-7. Followed by Biola who started their season at the Navy Open in Maryland with a 1-3 record. Biola will first play No. 18 Brown at 10 a.m. opening the weekend at Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center. The Beach wraps the day against No. 18 Brown who hosted the Bruno Classic and went 2-2, losing to Fordham and No. 7 Pacific on day one then beating No. 20 California Baptist and Air Force on the next day.
 
The matchup against No. 2 Stanford will another good test for Long Beach State after facing No. 3 USC this past weekend. The Cardinals were also at the Triton Invitational where they ended with a 4-0 record to start their season. Redshirt Senior Riley Pittman led the team with 11 goals in the tournament and was awarded MPSF Player of the Week. On Thursday they faced No. 12 UCSB for their home opener and won 16-9 with Batond Balogh scoring a hat-trick.
