Long Beach State Women's Volleyball Hosts Cal State Bakersfield, CSUN At The Walter Pyramid With Postseason Implications On The Line
The Long Beach State Women's Volleyball team will close the 2024 regular season this weekend as they host Cal State Bakersfield and CSUN at the Walter Pyramid. The Beach and the Roadrunners will face off on Friday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m., before LBSU goes up against CSUN on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. The two matches this weekend are critical for the Beach, as Long Beach State is in a three-way tie for fourth place in The Big West Standings. LBSU needs just one win to clinch a spot in The Big West Championships.

In The Rankings
• Long Beach State is not currently ranked in the AVCA Division I Poll. The Beach are 16-10 overall this season. With a 10-6 in Big West mark, LBSU is in a three-way tie with UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara for fourth place in the Big West standings. The Beach, along with the Tritons and the Gauchos, are just two games out of first place, which is also knotted in a three-way tie. 
• The Beach have faced a competitive schedule as they played four teams that are either nationally ranked or receiving votes in the AVCA Rankings during the preseason in No. 1 Pitt, No. 11 Oregon, No. 13 Arizona State, and Washington which is receiving votes. Against opponents who are ranked or receiving votes, Long Beach State is 0-4
• Cal State Bakersfield is 12-16 on the year and 6-10 in conference play. The Roadrunners are unranked in the AVCA Poll and are in eighth place in The Big West standings. 
• CSUN is not nationally ranked as the Matadors enter the week with a 9-18 overall record to go along with a 4-12 Big West mark. In the conference standings, CSUN sits in a tie for ninth place along with UC Riverside, which is also 4-12 in league action.

About the Beach
• Long Beach State went 1-1 last weekend and has now won four of its last five matches. The Beach defeated UC San Diego in four sets at home, before dropping a three-set sweep at Hawaii.
• Interim Head Coach Natalie Reagan is back for her second season overall at Long Beach State, but in her first at the helm. She earned her first-career win on Thursday, September 5 in a four-set victory over Northwestern. The win kicked off a four-match winning streak for the Beach.
• The Beach turned in a solid preseason as they strung together four-straight victories, marking the first time LBSU went on a four-match winning streak during the preseason since 2015.
• Reagan is joined on the sidelines by Associate Head Coach Bjarne Huus who is in his second season, as well as Assistant Coach Jordan Molina who returned to LBSU for his second year after serving as a Volunteer Assistant Coach during the 2022 season. In his first year with the Beach, Blake Omartian also serves as an assistant coach.
• The Beach are currently in a three-way tie for fourth place in The Big West Standings along with UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara. A win for Long Beach State will clinch a spot in The Big West Championships.
• During the preseason, the Beach earned a key victory over Washington State (3-0) as it was the first time in program history LBSU defeated WSU when playing in Long Beach, Calif. The sweep was also the first time an opponent handed the Cougars a straight-set loss this season.
• Senior outside hitter Natalie Glenn leads Long Beach State with 11 double-doubles on the year. She is also the Beach's leading scorer with 3.03 kills per set, while hitting .304.
Zayna Meyer has paced the Long Beach State offense at setter as she has distributed 8.48 assists per set to rank seventh in The Big West. She has totaled 2,989 career assists and is just 11 away from becoming the sixth person in Long Beach State Women's Volleyball program history to reach the 3,000 career assist milestone. Additionally, Meyer contributes 2.23 digs, 0.85 kills, 0.62 blocks, and 0.20 aces per set on the year.
• Sophomore middle blocker Ella Lomigora has been solid all season as she leads Long Beach State with a .308 attack percentage, which comes in eighth in the conference. She is second on the squad in blocking defense with a 0.97 blocks per set average which is good for sixth in the conference. During the preseason, Lomigora set two new career-highs as she tallied a career-best 10 blocks against Northwestern, becoming the first LBSU player to reach double-digit blocks since 2018. At UC Davis, she matched her career-high as she put up another 10 blocks on November 2.
• Senior middle blocker Kameron Bacon has been excellent on both sides of the ball this season contributing a league-leading 1.26 blocks per set which as earned her a pair of Big West Defensive Player of the Week awards this season. Her solid blocking defense has helped the Beach to a conference-leading 2.48 blocks per set average as a team.
• At libero, the Beach have utilized both redshirt freshman Sarah Vellucci and senior Jenna Giambi. Giambi is averaging 2.13 digs per set, while Vellucci adds 0.95 digs per set.
• Freshman Madi Maxwell is making a name for herself as the freshman opposite was named Big West Freshman of the Week (week of  10/14) for her excellent performances over CSUN and Cal State Bakersfield. Against the Roadrunners, she registered her first collegiate double-double (12 kills, 11 digs) and served up a career-high five aces. She has now recorded three double-doubles on the year.
• This season, Long Beach State has been chosen to finish third in The Big West Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Beach garnered 83 points and two first-place votes coming in just two points behind second place Hawaii, which garnered 85 points and three first-place votes. Cal Poly collected 94 points and five first-place votes and was chosen as the preseason favorite.

Scouting Cal State Bakersfield
• Cal State Bakersfield comes into the match against Long Beach State with a 12-16 overall record and a 6-10 conference mark.
• Last weekend, the Roadrunners went 1-1, with a 3-0 sweep against UC Riverside, before dropping a straight-set contest on the road at UC Davis.
• As a team, Cal State Bakersfield is hitting .220, while averaging 12.73 kills per set on 11.91 assists per set. The Roadrunners also have collected 13.31 digs per set, to go along with 1.75 blocks per set, and 1.83 aces per set.
• Bakersfield is led offensively by Sydney Dunning who averages 3.62 kills per set on a .236 hitting percentage. Dunning also leads the Roadrunners in aces with 42 to average 0.41 per set. She contributes 2.01 digs per set and 0.29 blocks per set on the year.
• The Roadrunners run a 6-2 offense with Nene Hawkins and Vivianna Samaniego splitting time at setter. Hawkins' 4.67 assists per set and Samaniego's 4.14 assists per set have paced Cal State Bakersfield to a .220 clip.
• Libero Katerina Georgiadis anchors the back row with 3.89 digs per set, while also chipping in 1.34 assists per set.
• At the net, Samia Bhakta and Learden Lee have put up a combined 154 total blocks. Bhakta leads the squad with 0.77 blocks per set, while Lee is hot on her tail with 0.75 blocks per set.

The Series: The Beach vs. The Roadrunners
Long Beach State and Cal State Bakersfield will meet for the 11th time in program history. In the all-time series, the Beach lead the Roadrunners, 8-2, as CSUB is looking for its first win over Long Beach State since 2021. Earlier this season in Bakersfield, Long Beach State earned a 3-0 sweep over the 'Runners to extend their winning streak over Cal State Bakersfield to five.

Scouting CSUN
• CSUN heads into the week with a 9-18 overall record and a 4-12 mark in Big West action.
• The Matadors went 1-1 last weekend as CSUN suffered a 3-1 setback at UC Davis, before taking down UC Riverside in five sets.
• As a team, CSUN is hitting .201, while averaging 12.73 kills per set on 11.88 assists per set. The Matadors also have collected 14.57 digs per set, to go along with 1.66 blocks per set, and 1.39 aces per set.
• The Matadors have two hitters averaging more than 3.00 kills per set in Hailey Brockway (3.60) and Amaris Smith (3.52). The pair also average 0.35 and 0.43 blocks per set, respectively, to contribute on both sides of the ball.
• At setter, Katie Kolar paces the offense with 9.85 assists per set. She also adds 2.72 digs per set, 0.71 kills per set, 0.39 blocks per set, and is third on the team with 0.24 aces per set.
• Defensively, libero Paige Senters has logged 4.03 digs per set in the back row, while also ranking second on the squad with 28 aces (0.26 per set).
• On blocking defense, the Matadors are led by Tatiana Turgeon's 88 blocks (0.81 per set). She is hitting .243 on the year, while contributing 1.08 kills per set.

The Series: The Beach vs. The Matadors
Long Beach State and CSUN will face off for the 90th time in program history. The Beach lead the all-time series with the Matadors 64-25 and have won the last two contests. Earlier this season LBSU swept CSUN in Northridge, Calif. When playing each other in Long Beach, Calif., the Beach lead the series 31-11.

Number Watch
Senior setter Zayna Meyer has totaled 2,989 assists in her career to rank sixth all-time at Long Beach State. She is just 11 assists away from reaching the 3,000-assist milestone joining the elite setters in program history such as Sheri Sanders (1st - 6,301), Misty May (2nd - 5,046), Sabrina Hernandez (3rd - 4,796), Nicole Vargas (4th - 4,695), and Keri Nishimoto (5th - 3,563). 

Ella Enchanted
Sophomore middle blocker Ella Lomigora has been on-point all season. The 6-foot-2 product out of Tempe, Ariz., is second on the team in blocking defense (0.97 blocks per set), which ranks her in the Top 10 in The Big West. She also leads the squad in hitting percentage (.308) to come in eighth in the conference. Lomigora posted a career-high 10 blocks against Northwestern, becoming the first LBSU player to reach double-digit blocks since 2018. Then she went on to lead the Beach with a career-high 12 kills on a career-best .857 (12-0-14) hitting percentage against Washington State. On November 2, she matched her career-high 10 blocks in a 3-2 win over UC Davis.

Bacon Sizzles
Senior middle blocker Kameron Bacon has been unstoppable at the net this season. She leads The Big West with 1.26 blocks per set on the year. She has won Big West Defensive Player of the Week honor twice this year, and for the fourth in her career. In addition to her strong blocking defense, Bacon contributes 1.37 kills per set on .243 attack percentage.

Mad Max
Freshman opposite Madi Maxwell had a breakthrough performance at Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday, October 12 as she served up a career-high five aces, while recording her first collegiate double-double (12 kills, 11 digs). For her efforts, she won Big West Freshman Player of the Week for the first time in her career. Maxwell had another career outing on November 2 against UC Davis as she logged her second career double-double with a career-best 17 kills, 12 digs, and seven blocks. She has continued to roll as she collected her third double-double of the season (13 kills, 10 digs) at UC Irvine on November 9.

The Best in the (Big) West
Long Beach State has four players who rank in the top 10 in The Big West statistics wise. Senior middle blocker Kameron Bacon leads the conference with 1.26 blocks per set. Bacon sets the tone for the remaining trio as Natalie Glenn ranks in the Top 10 in the conference in three categories (.304 - 9th, 3.03 kills per set - 10th, and 3.64 points per set - 10th). Additionally, Ella Lomigora ranks sixth in the league in blocks per set (0.97) and eighth in hitting percentage (.308), while Zayna Meyer ranks seventh in assists per set (8.48).

Next Up
With one won, Long Beach State will clinch a spot in The Big West Championships which will be held at the Bren Events Center in Irvine, Cailif., on Wednesday, Nov. 27, and November 29-30.
