Long Beach State Opens Home Weekend With Win Over Brown

The Beach rallied for a four-set win after dropping a close first set.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State got a lift with seven aces to open up a busy home weekend with a four-set win over Brown.
Sidney Hamaker led the way for Long Beach State with 12 kills, with a balanced cast following with five players who had either eight or seven kills.
Long Beach State (4-2) were stunned by Brown (1-3) in the opening set. The Beach moved out ton an early 12-8 lead on an ace by Madi Maxwell, but Brown battled back, tying the set at 14-14 on an ace by Eve McLaury and eventually pushing to a 16-14 lead on a kill by Elle Holley. Long Beach State rallied back to take a 20-19 lead on a kill by Maxwell, but at a 23-23 tie, a kill by Ally Panzloff put the Bears on top and Brown edged the Beach 26-24 in the first set.
In the second, Long Beach State again built an early lead, moving out on top 15-11 on a kill from Maxwell. Brown chipped away, eventually tying the set at 23-23, but two straight attack errors from Fisayo Afonja finished off the set for the Beach.
The third was shaping up to be another tight battle, but Long Beach State took command late in the set. Leading 16-15, the Beach picked up a sideout on a Birkelbach kill, and went on a big push with Izzy Mahaffey behind the endline, extending their lead to 23-15 before closing out a 25-17 victory. Using that late momentum from the third set, Long Beach State rolled in the fourth, hitting .520 to quickly establish control and closing out the match with a 25-12 win.
Long Beach State will host San Jose State at 4 p.m. on Saturday in the LBS Financial Credit Union Pyramid.
