The Dirtbags plated a pair of runs in the first inning and never let go of the lead in a 3-2 win over Pacific on Friday.
STOCKTON, Calif. – Long Beach State (9-8, 8-8 BWC) scored three early runs and never let go of the lead taking the series opener, 3-2, against Pacific (8-22, 0-9 WCC) on Friday night.
Connor Kokx doubled off the left field wall to start the ballgame extending his reached base streak to 18 consecutive games. The center fielder would eventually come in to score on a Chase Luttrell RBI single.
Luttrell finished the night 3-for-5 driving in one run and scoring two more. He now leads the team with 11 RBI on the season.
After a Cole Joy single put runners on first and second, a double play ball up the middle got kicked around allowing Luttrell to hustle all the way around and score the second Dirtbag run of the inning.
The defending Big West Pitcher of the Week, Johnnathan Lavallee, got the start on the mound for Long Beach State. The right-hander wound up tossing five innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four.
The first of those two runs came in the bottom half of the first, as a two-out walk came around to score on a RBI double.
Both teams were kept quiet in the second, but Long Beach State would tack on another run in the third. With one out in the frame, Luttrell came through with a triple down the left field line before coming in to score on Joy's second hit of the night.
The Tigers put together a two-out rally in the bottom of fifth as a double, walk, and RBI single made it a 3-2 ballgame.
The bullpen took over in the sixth, starting with Jack Noble. The right-hander came in and tossed three shutout innings, striking out five of the 10 Tigers he faced and surrendered just one hit.
He handed the ball off to Devereaux Harrison for the ninth, who worked a very quick 1-2-3 frame picking up his sixth save of the season.
The Dirtbags will look to keep it going tomorrow afternoon as they take on Pacific in game two of the three-game series at 3:00 p.m.
