Long Beach State Takes Down Pacific In GCC Showdown

Stockton, Calif. — In a battle of Golden Coast unbeatens, Long Beach State defeated No. 6 Pacific 15-13 in overtime to move into first place in conference play Thursday night.
Alika Naone scored a career-high four goals and guided the Beach to a well-balanced victory over the Tigers.
After taking falling behind 2-0 early in the period, goals from Garrett Zaan and Rafael Real Vergara tied the game at 2.
Pacific's Bogdan Djerkovic quickly gave Pacific the lead, but Matt Morris responded to tie the game at 3-3 after the first period.
The Beach senior trio of Theodoros Pateros, Garrett Zaan and Matt Morris combined for seven goals as Long Beach State found itself in a back-and-forth contest.
In the third period, Morris's second goal gave the Beach a 6-5 lead with 6:41 left.
After another Djerkovic goal, Zaan and Rafael Real Vergara scored to give LBSU an 8-6 lead with 4:20 remaining in the third period.
Pacific went on a 3-1 run to tie the game at 9-9 with 1:12 left in the third, but back-to-back goals by Naone gave the Beach an 11-9 lead with 6:24 left in regulation.
The Tigers tied the game thanks to goals from Reuel D'Souza and Djerkovic and forced overtime tied 12-12.
In the overtime period, Naone and Vergara each scored as the Beach went on to take the 15-13 victory.
Vergara was 3-for-3 on his penalty shot attempts.
In the cage, Andrej Bosanac had 12 saves.
The Beach will now take on No. 2 Cal on Saturday at Noon.
