Offense Stays Cold in 4-0 Loss Against San Diego

Long Beach State’s offense was unable to push a run across in a 4-0 setback against San Diego on Tuesday in the Dirtbags’ home opener. It was LBSU’s first defeat in a home opening game since a loss to Vanderbilt in 2014.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – On a cold Opening Night at Blair Field, Long Beach State (0-4) struggled to get its offense untracked in a 4-0 loss against visiting San Diego (4-0) on Tuesday. The Dirtbags again fell victim to a four-run inning, as three errors in the top of the second inning aided the only rally the Toreros would need to pick up the victory.
Freshman Basilio Pacheco made his first career start on Tuesday, and was saddled with the loss with the four unearned runs allowed. He surrendered five hits in five innings of work, including three doubles. He also walked a batter and struck out four Toreros on the night.
Santino Rivera had a pair of hits to lead the Long Beach State offense, including a leadoff single in the bottom of the eighth inning. Unfortunately, he was thrown out trying to advance to second, hampering a potential scoring opportunity. Later in that inning, senior Laine Huffman made his season debut, pinch-hitting after missing nearly an entire season due to injury.
Long Beach's best rally came in the ninth inning as pinch hitter Chase Luttrell led off with a walk. After Calvin Estrada's hot-shot single back up the middle, Aidan Malm worked a walk to load the bases with no outs. However, all three runners would be left stranded as the next three Dirtbags struck out to end the game.
The Dirtbag bullpen continued its solid start to the season, as Tyler Gums and Dylan Spacke each threw two scoreless innings of relief. Spacke allowed just one hit and had three strikeouts in his outing. Long Beach State's bullpen has a strong 0.73 ERA in 12.1 innings pitched so far this season, recording 12 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .116 batting average.
The Dirtbags will look to get things back on track this weekend as the Nevada Wolf Pack visits Long Beach. Game one of the three-game series is at 6 p.m. on Friday, with Friday Night Fireworks to follow. Fans should once again take note of the new 6 p.m. start time for the majority of Saturday home games this season, beginning with this weekend's series.
