LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Dirtbags (0-5) stranded the bases loaded in the ninth inning for the second game in a row, this time with the potential winning run in scoring position in a 1-0 loss to visiting Nevada (4-1) on Bohl Diamond at Blair Field. In a heated affair that contrasted the frigid temperature in Long Beach on Friday night, the Wolf Pack emerged victorious in a thrilling final frame.
Â
Long Beach State entered the ninth inning looking for its first hit, and Calvin Estrada got a rally going with an infield single to second base. After a sac bunt, Jacob Hughey hit a hot shot to third base that resulted in the second hit of the inning. With two outs, Dominic Campeau drew a walk to load the bases, which led to an ejection of Nevada head coach, and former Dirtbag, T.J. Bruce. However, with the bases full of Dirtbags, a strikeout ended the game for the second night in a row to send Long Beach State to defeat.
Â
Redshirt sophomore Matt Fields got the start on the mound for Long Beach State, making his first start since Mar. 5, 2017 at North Carolina. He worked through traffic in his 3.2 innings pitched, allowing two walks and four hits, but no runs to the Wolf Pack. Sophomore LHP Adam Seminaris entered the game in the fourth inning with the bases loaded and recorded a strikeout to strand all three runners on base. Seminaris would finish the game allowing one run on four hits in 5.1 innings with six strikeouts.
Â
Estrada also drew a pair of walks at the plate to reach base three times, and sophomore Chris Jimenez worked a pair of free passes to give him a team-high seven on the year. His on-base percentage is at a solid .571 to lead the Dirtbags in the early part of the season.
Â
Long Beach will look to even the series in game two at 6 p.m. on Saturday night as RHP John Sheaks is scheduled to make his season debut after missing all of the 2018 season due to injury. He'll be opposed by RHP (1-0, 0.00 ERA) for the Wolf Pack.
