Perry Leads Beach to Sixth-Straight Win
Worley Wins It After Shaky Eighth

April 29, 2006

BOX SCORE

LONG BEACH, CA-- Robert Perry drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth and Long Beach State (22-18-1, 6-1-1 Big West) won its sixth straight with a 7-5 series clinching win over visiting Pacific (22-18, 3-8 Big West)

Evan Longoria added to the lead, off of closer Eric Stolp, with a suicide squeeze with two outs, giving LBSU a 7-5 advantage. Longoria ended up going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Perry finished with a three-hit afternoon.

Jake Wild (2-4) pitched well in relieve for Pacific, but tired in the eighth giving up the go-ahead run, over four and one-third innings, of three-hit baseball, before yielding to Stolp, who gave up an unearned run in the inning.

In the eighth, in a tie game, Dirtbag reliever Vance Worley (2-6) made it interesting, loading the bases with two outs, before Justin Baum just missed a grand slam, flying out instead to left field to end the inning. Worley then got three-straight in the ninth to close it out.

Pacific got back into the game in the middle innings, scoring twice in the sixth with a sacrifice fly and an infield RBI single to close to within 5-3. The Tigers then added two more runs in the seventh to tie it at 5-5, as Brett Andrade could not hold a two-run lead with no outs and the bases loaded, after relieving Andrew Carpenter.

Carpenter went six-plus innings, giving up five runs on eight hits.

The Beach led off their half of the first with a triple by Robert Perry, and following a AJ Pinocchio sacrifice fly, Evan Longoria launched his ninth homer of the season to make it 2-0. Then an RBI groundout and a sacrifice fly in the second made it 4-1.

Curtis Pasma, making an emergency start for Joey Centanni, who came down with food poisoning, went the first three-plus innings, giving up five runs on seven hits as LBSU built a 5-1 lead.

The finale of the three-game series will be on Sunday at 1 p.m.
