Shaw Saves Sweep with Final Six Outs
Beach Move Above .500 as Pinocchio Continues Hot Streak

DAVIS, CA-- Bryan Shaw got the final six outs for his second save and Long Beach State (19-18-1) moved to above .500 for the first time since March 11 with a 2-1 win and sweep over host UC Davis (13-22).

AJ Pinocchio hit in his sixth-straight game, going 2-for-4 in the game.

The game was delayed for 78 minutes in the top of the eighth due to a small rain storm in the Central Valley. Aggie starter Bryan Evans (3-6) went the first seven and one-third innings, giving up two unearned runs, leaving following the rain delay.

The Beach got some timely strikeouts against UC Davis, from starter Donnie Hume in the third and from relievers Andrew Liebel (2-0) in the fifth and Vance Worley in the seventh.

Hume, after retiring the first seven Aggies, loaded the bases with one out, before getting back-to-back strikeouts to keep it at a 1-0 lead. Hume then got in some trouble in the fifth in a one-run game, putting runners on the corners with two outs, but Liebel go a strikeout of Jimmy Goetz to keep it at 2-1.

Hume went four and two-thirds innings, giving up one run on six hits and struck out a career-best six. Liebel retired all four batters he faced, before yielding to Worley in the seventh.

Worley got his own strikeout to end the seventh, with a UCD runner at second, and Aaron Hanke for the second time at the plate in that situation.

The Beach took advantage of shortstop Brandon Oliver's leadoff error to take its third lead of the series, scoring an unearned run on a double play ball in the first to lead 1-0. LBSU added another unearned run in the fourth off a three-base error by leftfielder Aaron Hanke to make it 2-0.

A two-out single by Matt Dempsey cut the lead in half in the fourth to make it 2-1.

The Dirtbags return home for a five-game homestand beginning on Tuesday against San Diego State.
