Long Beach State looks to build on recent progress as Big West play intensifies.
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Long Beach State returns to the road Thursday with an opportunity to translate recent growth into results against Cal State Fullerton. The Beach have shown improved late-game execution and offensive balance in recent outings, and will look to pair disciplined ball security with interior toughness to compete for 40 minutes. Controlling tempo, valuing possessions and sustaining defensive intensity will be central as conference play enters a critical stretch.
RIGHT AWAY
• Long Beach State enters the road rematch at 3-19 overall and 2-10 in Big West play, coming off its strongest conference win of the season in a recent 75-72 victory over UC Riverside. The Beach are seeking to respond after falling 84-66 to Cal State Fullerton in the first meeting on Jan. 22 at the LBS Financial Credit Union Pyramid.
• Ball security is the primary adjustment point from the first matchup. Despite shooting 50.0 percent from the field and 40.0 percent from three against Fullerton, Long Beach State committed 35 turnovers, which directly led to 43 Titan points. Reducing live-ball turnovers is critical to preventing Fullerton's transition scoring.
• JaQuoia Jones-Brown remains the engine on both ends. She leads the Beach at 16.9 points per game, 7.4 rebounds per game, and 37.2 minutes per game, while shooting 81.5 percent from the free throw line. In the first meeting with Fullerton, Jones-Brown added 13 points and nine rebounds while facing consistent defensive pressure.
• Offensive efficiency was not the issue in the first meeting. Long Beach State finished 24-of-48 from the field and 8-of-20 from three, generating quality looks through ball movement and spacing. Sustaining that shot quality while cutting down turnovers will be essential on the road.
• Interior defense must tighten. Fullerton outscored the Beach 54-32 in the paint in the first matchup, repeatedly converting off penetration and post touches. On the season, Long Beach State allows 73.0 points per game and will need improved containment at the point of attack to limit paint breakdowns.
• Rebounding effort was competitive and needs to be replicated. The Beach held a narrow 31-30 rebounding edge in the first meeting and currently average 35.6 rebounds per game. Securing the defensive glass remains critical to keeping Fullerton out of secondary transition opportunities.
• Khylee Pepe provides stability in the backcourt. She averages 7.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game and leads the team with 37 steals. Her ability to manage pressure and initiate offense will be key against Fullerton's active perimeter defense.
• Frontcourt and secondary scoring remain important. Rosie Akot and Judit Oliva Fernandez average 6.1 and 6.8 points per game respectively, while Kennan Ka adds 6.0 points and a team-high 2.5 assists per game. Balanced scoring and ball movement will be necessary to avoid stagnation against Fullerton's half-court defense.
• Tempo control will shape the rematch. Fullerton is most effective when it turns defense into offense, while Long Beach State has been at its best when it controls possessions and limits mistakes. Playing with poise from the opening tip will be essential in a hostile road environment.
