Beach battle to the end but Titans use second-half surge to secure win
FULLERTON, Calif. -- Long Beach State opened with a commanding first quarter and held a halftime lead, but Cal State Fullerton used a decisive third quarter and steady free throw shooting down the stretch to earn a 70-62 win Thursday night at Titan Gym.
The Beach (3-20, 2-11 Big West) opened the game with strong offensive execution, shooting 50 percent in the first quarter to take a 21-16 lead. LBSU carried that momentum into the break, holding Fullerton to 28.2 percent shooting in the first half while taking a 33-28 advantage into halftime.
Khylee Pepe led Long Beach State with 18 points and eight rebounds, attacking the paint and going 8-of-12 from the free throw line. JaQuoia Jones-Brown added 12 points and five assists, while Brynna Pukis contributed 10 points. Kennan Ka provided an efficient lift with five points on 2-of-2 shooting.
After extending its lead to eight midway through the third quarter, the Beach saw the Titans respond with a late surge. Fullerton closed the period on a 9-1 run to flip the momentum and take a 46-42 lead into the fourth.
The Titans capitalized on second-chance opportunities and interior scoring in the final quarter, pushing the margin to as many as 12 points. Fullerton finished with a 47-32 rebounding advantage and scored 38 points in the paint, along with 16 second-chance points and 16 fast break points.
LBSU shot 43.2 percent from the field and knocked down five three-pointers, but Fullerton's ability to generate extra possessions and convert at the free throw line proved decisive. The Titans went 25-of-32 at the stripe, including 13-of-14 in the fourth quarter.
Long Beach State made a late push, cutting the deficit to single digits in the final seconds on a three-pointer from Christy Reynoso and a jumper from Jones-Brown, but the Titans sealed the win at the line.
