LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Long Beach State carried a four-point halftime lead but could not withstand a decisive third quarter run by UC Davis in a 77-66 loss Saturday afternoon at the LBS Financial Credit Union Pyramid.
The Beach opened with strong energy and execution, taking a 17 to 15 lead after the first quarter and building a 35 to 31 advantage at halftime. Long Beach State shot efficiently in the opening half and controlled the tempo, getting quality looks in the paint and converting in transition.
JaQuoia Jones-Brown paced the Beach with 21 points, seven assists and six rebounds in 38 minutes, consistently pressuring the rim and creating offense for herself and her teammates. Khylee Pepe added 13 points and seven rebounds, while Kennan Ka contributed 16 points on 7 of 10 shooting to set a new career high, along with four assists in 36 minutes of action.
UC Davis shifted the momentum in the third quarter, outscoring Long Beach State 24-9 while shooting 75 percent from the field and knocking down five three pointers. A 15-0 Aggie run turned a narrow deficit into a double-digit lead, and UC Davis took a 55 to 44 advantage into the final period.
The Beach matched UC Davis with 22 points in the fourth quarter and continued to compete down the stretch, but the third quarter surge proved too much to overcome. Long Beach State finished the game shooting 39.3 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three-point range.
