FIRST PITCH
The Dirtbags conclude 2024 season this week at Cal Poly. Thursday and Friday action begins at 6 p.m. with the season finale on Saturday getting underway at 1 p.m.

SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
Cal Poly is third in the Big West with a 18-9 record. The Mustangs are 33-21 overall.

Ryan Stafford leads the Big West and is 22nd in Division I in doubles with 21. Stafford's 83 hits top the league and are 24th in D-1 this week. He is hitting .372 which is second on the team behind Jake Steels' .376. Stafford is tied for the team lead in home runs (6) with Steels and paces the club with 44 RBI.

Jakob Wright is Thursday's probable starter. He ranks 22nd in DIvision I in wins with 8 (8-3). Starting all 14 of his appearances, he leads the Big West and is 38th in Division in strikeouts with 95. He has a 2.96 ERA in 82 innings.

Friday's probable starter is to be determined.

Saturday's probable starter is Griffin Naess. Naess is 7-0, starting 11 times in 14 appearances.  He has struck out 58 in 67.1 innings, rcording a 3.07 ERA.

Closer Tanner Sagouspe has pitched in 26 games, making eight saves for Cal Poly. Jaccob Torres has pitched in 27 games, going 2-2 with two saves.

AGAINST THE OPPONENT
Long Beach State and Cal Poly have played 166 times dating back to the start of the series in 1957. The Dirtbags swept the series from the Mustangs last season in Long Beach and now lead the all-time series 99-66-1.

Games two and three of the Hawai'i series last week raised the total of games in which at least 2,000 fans came to a game to 12 at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field this season. In 30 home games, 58,373 fans came through the turnstiles for an average of 1,945 per game.

RUNNING THE BASES
Long Beach State has been aggressive on the bases this season. The Dirtbags have stolen 100 bases in 123 attempts.

In the past 19 games, dating back to the start of the San Diego State series, Long Beach State is 37-of-48 on the basepaths

LBSU stole six bases against Milwaukee on Mar. 1 and again at Pepperdine on Apr. 2. In the series against UC San Diego (Apr. 5-7), the Dirtbags stole nine bases in 10 attempts.

As a team, the Dirtbags start this week 26th in Division I in stolen bases per game (1.92) and 27th in total stolen bases.

Alex Champagne leads the team and the Big West in the category with 19 (19-24). John Newman Jr. (16-20) and Kyle Ashworth (16-17) are tied for second on the club. Adrian Lopez is fourth (12-13). Ty Borgogno is fifth (11-13) while Jack Hammond is sixth (10-15).

HITTING 21
Led by Myles Patton who struck out a career-high 13, seven Long Beach State pitchers struck 21 Milwaukee batters Mar. 1 in Long Beach.

The 21 strikeouts ties LBSU with George Washington (vs. UMBC on Feb. 27) and Georgia (vs. Clemson on Apr. 23) for the eighth most in a game by a Division I club this season.

The Dirtbags pitching staff have struck out 470 in 470.1 innings this season while only walking 186.

Long Beach State is among the national leaders in pitching. The Dirtbags are 20th in WHIP (1.35), 26th in earned run average (4.52), 26th in hits allowed per nine innings (8.32), 37th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.37), 38th in walks allowed per nine innings (3.79), 49th in shutouts (3), and 78th in strikeouts per nine innings (9.0).
