Hawai'i Edges The Dirtbags 2-0 On Senior Day

The Rainbow Warriors turned away a ninth inning LBSU rally to win
LONG BEACH, Calif.---The University of Hawai'i turned away a ninth-inning Long Beach State rally Sunday afternoon to defeat the Dirtbags 2-0 in the Big West baseball series finale at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
Jake Tsukada, batting second for the Rainbow Warriors, opened the scoring in the top of the first with a double that scored Jordan Donahue.
Kyle Ashworth singled with one out in the bottom of the first for the Dirtbags. He stole second. Connor Charpiot reached on an error by third baseman Elijah Ickes. UH starter Brayden Marx walked John Newman Jr. to load the bases. Armando Briseno hit a grounder to Kyson Donahue at first. He threw home to record the second out. Adrian Lopez struck out to end the inning.
Matthew Miura's double began the Hawai'i second. Miura advanced to third on a passed ball before Kellan Montgomery walked Jared Quandt. Itsuki Takemoto's grounder to second allowed Miura to score. With Quandt at second, Ickes popped out to second. Jordan Donahue flew out to left to end the frame.
Marx walked Alex Champagne to lead off the LBSU third. It was a bullpen day for the Rainbow Warriors; Zacary Tenn relieved Marx as Ashworth came to bat. Champagne was thrown out attempting to steal for only the fifth time in 24 attempts this season. With one out, Tenn walked Ashworth. With the count 1-2 on Charpiot, Ashworth advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Charpiot and Newman Jr. both flew out to right, bringing the inning to a close.
Tenn pitched three innings before giving way to Danny Veloz in the sixth. Veloz began the inning by walking Charpiot. A Veloz pitch hit Newman Jr. in the shoulder. Takemoto, who started the day as the designated hitter, came onto pitch. His first batter was Briseno, who grounded into a 3-6 fielder's choice, resulting in runners on the corners for the Dirtbags. Lopez lined into a 4-3 double play to end the inning.
Takemoto walked with two outs in the top of the seventh. Ickes reached on an infield single to third. With four consecutive lefties coming to bat, Long Beach State went to lefty Collin Miskelly in place of Montgomery. Miskelly walked Jordan Donahue to load the bases. Tsukada grounded out to second to keep the score 2-0.
Nick Marinconz singled up the with middle with two hits in the bottom of the seventh. Champagne singled to right, advancing Marinconz to second. With the lefthanded hitting Ashworth coming to bat, Hawai'i brought in lefty Connor Harrison. With the count 3-2, Ashworth popped out to shortstop for the third out.
Austin Machado walked to begin the top of the eighth. Miskelly struck out Kyson Donahue before righty Nick Wallerstedt entered to face the righthanded hitting Dallas Duarte. Champagne tracked down Duarte's shot to the left-center gap for the second out. Grant Cherry relieved Wallerstedt. He faced Miura, who singled to the right. Quandt lined out to center to end the inning.
Takemoto singled to lead off the ninth. With pinch-runner Naighel Calderon in motion on a hit and run, Ickes lined out to center. Champagne threw onto first to complete the double play. Cherry struck out Jordan Donahue to send it to the bottom half of the frame.
Alex Giroux entered to try to close it out for the Rainbow Warriors. Tsukada made a diving catch of a Lopez flare to get the first out. Cole Santander reached an infield single. Justin Roulston ran for Santander as pinch hitter Cristien Banda came up. In his third at-bat of the year, Banda singled to right on a 0-2 count. Ty Borgogno ran for Banda as Marinconz came up. Giroux struck out Marinconz as Borgogno stole second. Champagne was hit by a 1-2 Giroux breaking ball to load the bases. Ashworth's roller went off Giroux's glove and was fielded by the shortstop, Jordan Donahue, who threw onto first to end the game.
The Dirtbags honored its 2024 senior class consisting of Marinconz, Newman Jr., Nathen Morris, Wallerstedt, Mason Dillow, and Jonathan Largaespada before the start of the game. In its 30th and final home game of the season, the Dirtbags drew at least 2,000 fans for the 12th time, as 2,032 came through the turnstiles on Sunday.
The six Rainbow Warriors' pitchers scattered six hits, with Champagne going 2-for-3 for Long Beach State. Jordan Donahue and Quandt combined for four of the eight UH (34-16, 17-10 Big West) hits.
Long Beach State (24-26-1, 9-17 Big West) travels to Cal Poly (33-21, 18-9 Big West) to end the regular season next week. The three-game set begins on Thursday with coverage on ESPN+ beginning at 6 p.m.
