Briseno's third home run comes with two outs in the bottom of the eighth
LONG BEACH, Calif.---Armando Briseno's two-out solo home run in the bottom of the eighth proved to be the difference as Long Beach State defeated the University of Hawai'i 4-3 Friday night in the Big West baseball opener between the two clubs at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
Adrian Lopez reached on an infield single with one out in the bottom of the second. He stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Hawai'i catcher Dallas Duarte. The Rainbow Warriors brought the infield in against Cole Santander. Santander's grounder to Jake Tsukada at second was fielded on a big hop. The only play for Tsukada was to first as Lopez came in to score.
Jared Quandt doubled with one out in the top of the third. With two outs, Owen Geiss walked Jordan Donahue. Tsukada flew out for the final out.
Alex Champagne's one out infield single in the bottom of the third was followed by a Connor Charpiot double to center. John Newman Jr.'s sac fly to left plated Champagne. Kyle Ashworth's single drove in Charpiot for a 3-0 score.
Kyson Donahue hit an opposite-field double down the leftfield line with one out in the top of the fourth. Duarte doubled down the leftfield line as well, scoring Donahue. Matthew Miura walked. With the hit-and-run on, Ben Zeigler-Namoa flew out to left as both runners had to return to their respective bases. Quandt lined out to center to end the frame.
Austin Machado cut the Long Beach State lead to 3-2 with a two-out double in the top of the fifth that plated Tsukada.
Champagne doubled down the right field line off Rainbow Warriors' reliever Alex Giroux to lead off the bottom of the fifth. A Charpiot fly ball to center was deep enough for Champagne to reach third. UH brought the infield against Newman Jr. Giroux struck out Newman Jr. before getting Ashworth to ground out to short for the third out.
Quandt singled to begin the top of the seventh. Ickes grounded into a 4-6-3 double play before Jordan Donahue doubled down the rightfield line. Nathen Morris relieved Geiss. He induced a Tsukada grounder to second to get the Dirtbags out of the inning.
Jonny Rodriguez singled up the middle to begin the Dirtbags' seventh. Ty Borgogno attempted to sacrifice Rodriguez over, but he popped up his attempt as Duarte caught the ball for the first out. Champagne's blooper to left fell in, but Rodriguez had to hold, and he was thrown out 7-4 for the second out. Charpiot flew out to right to conclude matters.
Kyson Donahue stretched an apparent single into a double with one out in the top of the eighth. Morris struck out Duarte to get the second out. Miura tied the score with a single through the left side. Pinch-hitter Sean Rimmer struck out for the third out.
Briseno's home run set the Dirtbags up for Mike Villani to come on for the save. He got Quandt to ground to first for the opening out. Ickes grounded out to short before Jordan Donahue flew out to left to end the game.
Villani threw six pitches, all fastballs, for his ninth save of the season. Five of the six pitches were clocked at 96 miles per hour, with the remaining pitch coming in at 95 mph. Morris picked up his first win of the season, pitching 1.1 innings of two-hit relief. Geiss, a freshman, threw a season-high 6.2 innings.
Batting leadoff for the first time this season, Champagne went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Briseno was 2-for-4 for the Dirtbags. Quandt and Miura posted two hits for Hawai'i, which had its 11-game winning streak snapped by Long Beach State on Friday night.
