The Dirtbags Fall 7-2 To Hawai'i

Connor Charpiot record two of the six Long Beach State hits
LONG BEACH, Calif.---The University of Hawai'i defeated Long Beach State 7-2 Saturday night in Big West baseball action at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
Jordan Donahue walked to lead off the game. A Van Larson wild pitch sent Donahue to second. Jake Tsukada singled up the middle, where LBSU centerfielder Alex Champagne fielded the ball. He threw how where Donahue was called out. Austin Machado grounded into a 3-6-3 double play to end the inning.
Larson retired six in a row before issuing a two-out walk to Elijah Ickes in the top of the third. Ickes stole second with the count 2-1 on Donahue. The UH leadoff hitter walked on the next pitch. Tsukada's opposite field single to left scored Ickes. Austin Machado's opposite field double to the left field corner drove in Donahue. Kyson Donahue grounded out for the final out.
Jonny Rodriguez doubled to left to begin the Dirtbags' third. Hawai'i starter Randy Abshier struck out Ty Borgogno. Champagne hit a grounder back to Abshier on the mount. The UH lefty's throw to third was high, allowing both runners to reach safely. Connor Charpiot's opposite field single to right scored Rodriguez. With runners on the corners, John Newman Jr. walked to load the bases. Kyle Ashworth flew out to left, but the ball wasn't deep enough for Champagne to tag and score. Armando Briseno grounded out to second for the third out.
Long Beach State brought in Mason Dillow in relief to begin the fourth. With one out, Matthew Miura singled. Dillow hit Naighel Calderon to give the Rainbow Warriors runners on first and second. Dillow struck out pinch hitter Ben Zeigler-Namoa for the second out. Dillow struck out Ickes to keep the game 2-1.
Cole Santander walked on four Abshier pitches with one out in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Borgogno reached on an infield single to short. Champagne struck out to end the inning.
Tsukada recorded his third hit of the game, a single to right center with one out in the top of the fifth. A Dillow wild pitch advanced Tsukada to second. Machado's second hit of the night, a single to center, drove in Tsukada for a 3-1 score. Dillow's second wild pitch of the inning sent Machado to second. Kyson Donahue's ground out to first pushed Machado to third. Dallas Duarte singled to left to drive in Machado. Miura grounded into a 6-4 fielder's choice to conclude matters.
The third Hawai'i pitcher of the game, Harrison Bodendorf, walked Borgogno to begin the bottom of the seventh. Kyson Donahue, the UH first baseman, dropped the exchange on a pickoff attempt, allowing Borgogno to steal second. Bodendorf struck out the next three Dirtbags to retire the side.
Duarte's single began the top of the eighth. He would reach third on a pair of Jonathan Largaespada wild pitches. Miura walked for Hawai'i runners on the corners. With the infield against Calderon, Miura took second on defensive indifference. Calderon walked to load the bases. The infield remained in against Zeigler-Nomoa, who hit a grounder to Adrian Lopez at second. Lopez threw home for the first out. Ickes' shot went off Largaespada's glove to Lopez, who threw to Briseno at short for the second out as Miura scored.
Santander's two-out double in the bottom of the eighth drove in Lopez to make it 5-2. Hawai'i scored two unearned runs in the top of the ninth with two outs due to a Long Beach State error.
For the 11th time in 29 home games this season, the Dirtbags welcomed more than 2,000 fans through the turnstiles, and 2,010 watched the action.
Bodendorf picked up his second save of the season, pitching the final four innings for the Rainbow Warriors. He struck out 10, including five in a row at one point. Itsuki Takemoto pitched a scoreless fifth to earn his third victory of the year. The trio of UH pitchers limited the Dirtbags to six hits, with Charpiot going 2-for-5. Tsukada and Machado both had three hits for UH.
