There are three flights of 16 competitors in the javelin, discus, and hammer throw, with the top 12 advancing to nationals.

The shot put has four flights of 12, with the top 12 making the national championships.

In the hurdles events, the selection process is rigorous. The first round consists of six heats, each with eight racers. The top three from each heat, along with the next six fastest, will move to the quarterfinals. The quarterfinals will have three heats of eight, and only the top three from each heat, along with the next three fastest, will advance to the nationals.

The 800m race follows a similar format. The opening round features six heats, each with eight entries. The top three from each heat, along with the next six fastest, will advance to the quarterfinals. The quarterfinals will have three heats of eight, and only the top three from each heat, along with the next three fastest, will move to the national championship meet.

The triple jump comprises four flights of 12, with the top 12 making nationals.

The high jump features two hits of 24, with the top 12 moving on to the national meet.

LOOKING BACK
Long Beach State won five individual Big West titles at the May 10-11 championships in San Luis Obispo. The Beach men finished third, while the LBSU women were fourth.
