Long Beach State Wins 4 Big West Individual Track & Field Titles On Saturday

The Beach Men Finish Third; LBSU Women Place Fourth

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—Long Beach State won four individual Big West titles on Saturday as the Big West Championships concluded at the Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex. The Beach men finished third, while the LBSU women were fourth.Â
MEN
Justin Watterson won the 110m hurdles in a time of 13.75. His performance is the third fastest in school history. Watterson is the first Beach entry to win the 110m hurdles since Davon Wilson-Angell won in 2014.
Kash Powell earned the 800m title after running 1:50.90. He led a 1-2 finish for the Beach in the race as Alex Kalmar was second (1:52.51). Cristian Martinez was fifth (1:54.16), and Connor Phillips rounded the scoring in sixth (1:54.32).
Omri Shiff won the 400m hurdles in the ninth fastest time in school history, 51.08. He is the first LBSU competitor to win the race since 2016 (Ryan Colbrook). Justin Watterson's 52.79 put him in sixth place in the event. Â
In the triple jump, Novye' James finished third (50-3 1/2). Elijah Harris (48-10 1/4) came in fifth, and LaSalle Jackson (48-5 1/4) placed seventh.Â
Daniel Palacio and UC Davis' Ryan Ishibashi went 16-5 1/2 to earn a spot on the podium in the pole vault. Ishibashi made it to 16-5 1/2 in fewer attempts, so he was awarded second, and Palacio was awarded third.
Aiden Pastorian recorded a season-best 58-7 1/2 in the shot put to reach the podium in third. Jaylon Wells followed with a sixth-place 55-5 3/4.Â
In the 1500m, Kalmar ran the fifth fastest time in school history, 3:45.28, to finish fourth, and Martinez ran the ninth fastest time in school history, 3:48.19, to finish seventh.
Pablo Gamez was fifth in the hammer throw (194-4). Canaan Wharry placed eighth (187-6).Â
Tristyn Flores recorded the fourth fastest 200m time in school history, 20.89, to finish fifth in the race. Earlier in the day, he was sixth in the 100m (10.46).Â
Glen Quayle and Aidan Turner cleared 15-0 in the pole vault. Quayle was credited with sixth as he made it to the 15-foot mark in fewer attempts.Â
The 4x400m relay of Mekhi Mays, Patrick Henderson, Kash Powell, and Naythn Scruggs ran a season-best 3:10.66 to finish fourth.Â
The Beach scored 152 points. Cal Poly was the team champion with 185 points.Â
WOMEN
Hailey Fune' won the 100m hurdles in a time of 13.49. Rahni Turner led most of the race, but an apparent injury limited her to an eighth-place finish. Fune' returned later in the meet to tie for eighth with three others in the high jump (5-3 1/4).Â
Sofia Lavreshina was the runner-up in the 400m, running 54.39.Â
Giszelle Hrehor was third in the hammer throw with a toss of 180-10. Keeley Rasmussen threw a season-best 178-3 to take fourth.Â
KiiKii Brown recorded her season-best in the triple jump on her final attempt, 39-2 1/4. Her efforts resulted in a fifth-place showing.
Jenelle Hurley tied her season-best in the high jump, 5-5 3/4, to finish seventh.Â
The 4x100m relay of Lavreshina, Jayda Rustemoglu, Turner, and Kaitlyn Williams finished seventh (46.42).Â
The 4x400m relay of Rustemoglu, Lavreshina, Williams, and Sofia Bailey placed seventh (3:52.60).Â
Long Beach State scored 93.75 points. Cal Poly broke LBSU's two-year reign as Big West championships. The Mustangs' winning total was 130.75.Â
