LOS ANGELES, Calif. - No. 8 Long Beach State Women's Water Polo team loses their first game of the season to No. 18 LMU 12-9.
The Beach took an early 2-0 lead in the first two minutes of the first quarter with goals by Mariah Walker and Martina Cardona. LMU would respond with three goals of their own, before Kathryn McCullough finds the back of the cage to even the score 3-3 to end the first quarter.
The second quarter started with an early goal from Walker, her second goal of the game. After six lead changes and ties, the period would end tied at 6-6.
Cardona struck first for her second goal of the game to take a 7-6 lead. The Lions would take control of the rest of the third period with five straight goals over the Beach.
The Beach defense came out strong to start the final period holding LMU to only one goal, but only scored two goals to end the game 12-9.
Walker led the team with four goals, followed by Cardona with three.
The Beach are back in action Friday, Feb. 2nd at the Triton Invite. First match of the tournament will be against UC Davis at 1:20 p.m.
