LONG BEACH, Calif.— No. 8 Long Beach State finished the regular season on a high note on Friday, beating a tough Loyola Marymount team 16-14 in overtime. It was senior night for Long Beach State, but two underclassmen were the stars of the show for the Beach, as Bruno Chiappini and Robert Lopez Duart scored six and five goals, respectively.
Long Beach State (16-11, 2-3) came out of the gate aggressively and it paid off early as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Bruno Chiappini opened the scoring followed by goals from Caleb Francisco, Robert Lopez Duart, and two from Evan Cain. LMU would score two goals late in the quarter to keep things close, making the game 5-2 headed into the second period of play.
Loyola Marymount (15-7, 3-1 WCC) would battle back in the second quarter outscoring Long Beach State 6-4. Cain and Lopez Duart both scored to complete hat-tricks, while Botond Hajdu also found the back of the net, but the Lions had trimmed the Beach lead to 9-8 at halftime.
The Lions scored early in the third quarter to even the score, but Long Beach State was able to score two more goals through Chiappini and Lopez Duart. Both teams buckled down defensively throughout the third to keep the game within reach for Loyola Marymount.
Bruno Chiappini converted a five-meter penalty early in the fourth quarter to stretch the Long Beach State lead to three goals, but Loyola Marymount would not back down coming back to score three straight goals to tie the game. Chiappini would score again with under two minutes in the game, but the Lions found an equalizer late in the fourth to send the game to overtime.
Loyola Marymount scored the first goal of overtime to give them their first lead of the game, but back-to-back five-meter penalty goals from Chiappini and a late goal from Robert Lopez Duart was enough to close out the game for Long Beach State.
Following the game, Long Beach State recognized graduating seniors Joe Palmblade, Garrett Potter, and Abdelrahman Soliman for their contributions to the program.
Long Beach State's focus will now turn to the Big West Tournament. The Beach have earned the No. 5 seed and will be taking on No. 4 UC Davis on Friday, November 17.
