Long Beach State Denied In Opening Round Of Big West Tournament

Long Beach State's season ended in the sudden death loss.
LA JOLLA, Calif.— The Long Beach State men's water polo season came to an end after falling to UC Davis in the Big West Tournament on Friday. It was an impressive defensive effort from Long Beach State included 14 steals and 14 saves from Liam Ward but ultimately the Beach came up just short, falling 11-10.
The game started as a tense defensive battle with each team forcing turnovers and tough shots for the opposition. UC Davis broke the deadlock with 2:26 left in the quarter. The Aggies added a second a minute later, but Long Beach State would bounce back with consecutive goals of their own. Evan Cain opened the scoring for Long Beach State skipping a shot past UC Davis' goalkeeper, and Robert Lopez Duart evened the score with just two seconds left on the clock.
Long Beach State took the lead after a Bruno Chiappini goal to open the second quarter, but UC Davis would equalize a few minutes later. The Beach would retake the lead after Robert Lopez Duart found the back of the net for his second goal of the game. A gritty effort by the Beach defense and goalkeeper Liam Ward held UC Davis scoreless the rest of the period to keep the game 4-3 at halftime.
It was UC Davis who came out scoring early in the second half, tying the game at 4-4. Long Beach State had a few powerplay opportunities but were unable to convert and the Aggies found the back of the cage again to take the lead 5-4. Long Beach State earned their sixth powerplay opportunity and, after a timeout, were able to capitalize with a goal from Evan Cain to tie the score. Just a minute later, Guillermo Ocasio earned a five-meter penalty, which Cain buried to complete his hat-trick and give Long Beach State a 6-5 lead. However, UC Davis responded just seconds later to even the score once again.
The Beach opened the fourth quarter with a powerplay opportunity, with Bruno Chiappini looking to be through on goal, but he was dragged down by a defender resulting in a five-meter penalty. Robert Lopez Duart stepped up and converted the penalty to restore the one-goal lead for Long Beach State. UC Davis scored back-to-back goals, including a penalty of their own, to take an 8-7 lead with 5:56 left in the game. Lopez Duart's fourth goal of the game leveled the score, but UC Davis would convert a powerplay to retake the lead, 9-8. Long Beach State would tie the score on a powerplay converted by Bruno Chiappini, but UC Davis would earn a powerplay of their own on the other end of the pool. The Beach defense stood strong, with Liam Ward making a huge save to deny the Aggies. Long Beach State set up their offense with :33 left in the game but were unable to get a shot as the game headed to overtime.

Long Beach State looked to hold off UC Davis in the second overtime, but an impressive tip assist from the Aggies led to a wide-open goal. Evan Cain had a good look in the dying seconds of the period but has shot rattled off the post and the game headed to sudden death. Unfortunately, UC Davis earned a powerplay early in the sudden death period and capitalized to win the game 11-10.
