LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State used an 11-0 run in the fourth quarter to erase a double-digit deficit and tie the game with just 1:25 remaining. However, the Beach's rally was cut short as UC Irvine earned the 60-57 win over LBSU on Saturday at the Walter Pyramid.
The Beach (7-7, 2-2 Big West) had three double-figure scorers in the game as did the Anteaters (11-3, 3-0 Big West). The Black and Blue Rivalry game was a competitive one from the start as both teams traded points back and forth, battling each other though seven lead changes. Both teams went on several long scoring runs, but the other always seemed to chip away and get themselves back in the game.
Long Beach State had a 7-3 lead early in the game after a three from Kristyna Jeskeova, but the lead didn't last long as UC Irvine used a 9-0 run to take a 10-7 edge over the Beach. The Anteaters would lead by four (15-11) as the end of the first quarter.
LBSU started the second quarter off with five-straight points to take a 16-15 lead, before using a 7-0 run to jump out in front 23-17. UC Irvine managed to cut Long Beach's lead down to one (23-22) with 4:26 remaining, but the Beach weren't done yet. Long Beach State took a 30-24 lead into halftime after Patricia Chung sunk a trey with three seconds left of the clock.
UC Irvine opened the second half with six-straight points to take a 36-35 edge over Long Beach State. However a pull up jumper from Malia Bambrick would even the score at 39-all with 3:09 left to play in the frame. Kianna Hamilton-Fisher's layup at 1:25 knotted the score once again (41-41), but UC Irvine would go back up by four (45-41) and hold the lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Beach cut the Anteaters' lead down to two (45-43) to start the fourth with a pair of two made free throws from Lauren Green, but then would go cold. UC Irvine went on a 9-0 run as they opened up a 54-43 lead over LSBU. With the game looking to be out of reach for Long Beach State, the Beach showed their grit and battled back once again. Jeskeova contributed six points, two rebounds, and two steals in that run to highlight LBSU's comeback. With the game tied at 54-54 at 1:25, UC Irvine extended its lead back up to four (58-54) with 48 seconds remaining. A Bambrick three at 44 seconds made it a one-point game (58-57), but that would be all the Beach could muster as the Anteaters earned the 60-57 win.
Jeskeova led Long Beach State with 10 rebounds, while adding nine points, six steals, and one assist. Bambrick finished as the Beach's leading scorer, putting up 14 points, Tori Harris added 13, and Hamilton-Fisher contributed 10. Hamilton-Fisher also led the team with six assists, three blocks, and two steals, to go along with three boards.
UC Irvine's leading scorer was Nevaeh Parkinson as she concluded the game with 14 points. Also recording double-digits for the Anteaters were Nikki Tom (11 points) and Olivia Williams (10 points). Hunter Hernandez was the team's leading rebounder with nine boards, while adding eight points, and four assists. Deja Lee and Diaba Konate led the team with five assists apiece, while Konate added three steals.
Long Beach State looks to bounce back on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at Cal Poly. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Mott Athletic Center.
