Long Beach State Shuts Down Cal Poly, 65-42

Courtney Murphy leads a quartet of double-figure scorers with a season-high 15 points

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Long Beach State jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back as the Beach held the edge throughout the game as they defeated Cal Poly 65-42 at Mott Gym on Thursday night.

Long Beach State (8-7, 3-2 Big West) was led offensively by redshirt senior Courtney Murphy who led a quartet of double-figure scorers with a season-high 15 points. In addition to LBSU's solid offensive showing, the Beach's defense also shined as they limited Cal Poly (4-9, 1-4 Big West) to just 26.9 percent shooting from the field.
The Beach defense forced the Mustangs into 18 turnovers as LBSU picked up 12 steals. Additionally, Long Beach out-rebounded Cal Poly, 42-34.

Murphy came off the bench and dropped 15 points to go along with three rebounds, two assists, and one steal. The Beach also got solid showings from Malia Bambrick, Tori Harris, and Kianna Hamilton-Fisher. Bambrick logged 11 points with seven boards, and five assists, while Harris added 11 points to go along with five rebounds, two steals, and one assist. Hamilton-Fisher rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points as she scored all of her points in the first half. She also added four rebound, three assists, and three steals.

Long Beach State wasted little time getting going as the Beach took an early 5-0 lead and led the rest of the way. With a 14-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, LBSU kicked off the second quarter on an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 22-8. The Beach led by as many as 18 points (28-10) after back-to-back threes from Murphy and Bambrick as the visitors went on to take a 30-15 lead into the locker room.



Through the first three quarters, Long Beach State held Cal Poly to single digits in each frame as the Beach posted a 45-23 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Mustangs turned in their best showing in the fourth quarter as they shot 53.8 percent from the field and scored 19 points. However, Long Beach State dropped 20 points in the frame while shooting 42.9 percent from the floor. The Beach led by as many as 25 (62-37) with just over two minutes left to play and closed out the game winning by 23 (65-42).

Cal Poly was led by Natalia Ackerman's 11-point performance. She also posted eight rebounds in the game. Sydney Bourland led the team with nine boards, while adding four points.

Long Beach State will return home to host Hawaii on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 3 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and Spectrum Sports Net.
