LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State showed it was ready to overcome anything that was thrown at them on Saturday afternoon when their game against Hawaii was suddenly moved to the Gold Mine, due to weather. The Beach went into the Goldmine for the first official women's basketball game in program history since 2004 and took down Hawaii, the defending Big West Champions, by a score of 62-48.
The Beach (9-7, 4-2 Big West) shot 45.8 percent in the contest and picked up 14 steals, while forcing Hawaii (5-9, 3-2 Big West) into 22 turnovers. LBSU capitalized and scored 19 points off turnovers.
Tori Harris led LBSU in scoring with 15 points, while adding a team-best eight rebounds, and four assists. Malia Bambrick also recorded double-figures with 10 points to go along with four boards.
Leading the defensive charge for the Beach was Kristyna Jeskeova who racked up six steals, while also contributing nine points, five rebounds, three assists, and one block.
Long Beach State got on the board first thanks to a bucket from Kianna Hamilton-Fisher, who would finish the contest with eight points. A three from Harris at 5:26 in the first quarter gave the Beach a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the way as LBSU held a 10-point (17-7) advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The Beach connected on 6-of-11 field goals in the second quarter to shoot 54.5 percent from the field, while knocking down 50 percent of their shot from long distance. Long Beach's hot shooting put the Beach up by 15 (35-20) at halftime.
Long Beach State took its largest lead in the third quarter as they led by as many as 20 on three separate occasions. Hawaii closed out the frame with six-straight points to cut the Beach's lead down to 14 (49-35).
The fourth quarter saw the Beach push their lead back up by 18 (53-35) after a fast break layup from Hamilton-Fisher at 9:02. However, Hawaii began to chip away and cut LBSU's lead down to 11, but the Beach just surged ahead and claimed the win, 62-48, marking their first win over Hawaii since January 23, 2020.
Hawaii was led by Kallin Spiller's 16 points, while McKenna Haire posted 15 points, and Nnenna Orji added seven rebounds.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 6 p.m. at Cal State Fullerton. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
