Beach Women’s Basketball Shuts Down Cal State Fullerton, 70-42

FULLERTON, Calif. – Long Beach State came into Cal State Fullerton and used an 11-0 run in the first quarter to take a lead that the Beach would not relinquish as LBSU rolled to a 70-42 victory over the Titans on the road on Thursday night.
The Beach (10-7, 5-2 Big West) shot a hot 58.8-percent from the field, while taking 12 steals and forcing Cal State Fullerton (7-10, 2-6 Big West) into 23 turnovers. LBSU capitalized on those turnovers scoring 26 points as the led by as many as 28 in the game.
Redshirt senior guard Malia Bambrick paced the Beach offense with a season-high tying 21 points as she connected on 9-of-13 field goals, while making three triples. She also added two rebounds, two steals, and one assist.
Long Beach State had three players score in double-figures as Ma'Qhi Berry and Courtney Murphy each finished with 10 points. Berry also led the Beach with six assists, while adding three boards and three steals. Murphy came off the bench and contributed three rebounds, one assist, and one steal.
Kristyna Jeskeova led LBSU in rebounding with six boards to go along with four steals and three points.
Cal State Fullerton got on the board first, but their lead did not last long as Kianna Hamilton-Fisher counter with a jumper to even the score. From there, the Beach went on an 11-0 run to open the game up, 18-3 en route to leading the Titans 25-8 at the end of the quarter.
The second quarter was all Bambrick as she scored all six points for the Beach. The Titans tallied 10 points in the frame, but Long Beach State's large lead from the first quarter helped them sustain a 31-18 lead at halftime.
The Beach came out of the locker room and were on fire. Long Beach State made 10-of-12 field goals to shoot a whopping 83.3 percent from the field in the frame. Although Fullerton shot 41.7 percent, the Beach outscored the Titans, 24-14, as they held a commanding 55-32 advantage heading into the final quarter.
The final 10 minutes of action saw the Beach extend their lead to as many as 28 as the outscored the Titans 15-10 and cruised to a 70-42 victory.
Cal State Fullerton was led by Aixchel Hernandez who dropped 20 points as she went 10-from-12 from the field, while adding four rebounds. Fujika Nimmo led the Titans in rebounding with six boards to go along with eight points, but committed six turnovers.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 21 when they host UC San Diego at the Walter Pyramid. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
