Five finish in double-figures for Long Beach State, but hot shooting from Utah Valley undoes LBSU.
OREM, Utah – Tobias Rotegaard had 16 points off the bench, leading a solid offensive effort for Long Beach State, but Utah Valley outdid the Beach in that regard led by 25 points from Le'Tre Darthard as LBSU fell on the road 88-78.
Long Beach State had five players finish in double-figures on the night. Rotegaard finished with three made 3-pointers on the way to his 16, while Tone Hunter set a career-high with 13 points and five assists. Lassina Traore finished with his third double-double, putting up 12 points with a career-high 16 rebounds, while Joel Murray added 13 points and Marcus Tsohonis finished with 12.
It was the Beach that captured the early momentum, harrying Utah Valley (4-4) into multiple turnovers leading to easy points as the Beach took an 8-0 lead in the opening minutes. Utah Valley bounced back as the first half consisted of big runs for both sides.
The Wolverines scored nine unanswered to take the lead, part of a 21-2 run that saw Utah Valley take an 11-point first half lead. Long Beach State was able to come all the way back however, using a Utah Valley technical foul to help push in front 33-31.
A defensive stop followed by a great feed from Hunter to Murray just beat the halftime buzzer, as Long Beach State took a 45-44 lead into the break.
In the first five minutes of the second half, a short cold stretch for the Beach proved to be the difference as LBSU was unable to slow down the Utah Valley attack. The Wolverines pushed out to a seven-point lead at 55-48, and the Beach would get no closer than six the rest of the way. Darthard finished with 25 points to lead Utah Valley, while Trey Woodbury had 15 of his 19 in the second half to help hold off Long Beach State.
Long Beach State will stay on the road, facing Sacramento State in a week as the Beach will play the Hornets on Saturday, December 10 at 3:30 p.m. Coverage will be provided by ESPN+.
