LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State throwers had another great showing as the team opened up day one of the Long Beach Invitational on Friday while the distance runners competed at the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific University.
The Long Beach Invitational was not the only event for the Beach on Friday, as several distance runners were competing in the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific University.
A new school record was set in the men's 5000m Run as senior transfer Arturo Sotomayor posted a time of 14:03.95. That mark is almost a full four seconds faster than the previous school-best set back in 2014.
Raymon Ornelas (14:33.75) and Ricky Villa (15:05.26) also ran well in the 5000m, each posting a new lifetime-best. Ornelas' time qualifies him for the Big West Championships next month.
On the women's side, Haley Adel posted an 18:00.23 mark in the 5000m Run shattering her personal best.
Malia Talavou had a nice day setting personal bests in both of her events. Starting with the Shot Put, the sophomore posted a 13.22m mark, good for a second-place finish. In her second throw in Discus, she set a new career-best with a throw of 39.49m.
Brianna Uipi just missed out on a personal best in Shot Put as well with a 12.84m throw, which was good for a third-place finish.
The women had a nice showing in the Javelin as well finishing second through sixth. Hannah Katches led the group with a throw of 36.34m. In her first ever time throwing, Shyann Reynolds came out with a third-place finish with a 35.17m mark just ahead of her sister, Shalee Reynolds who posted a personal best at 32.29m.
On the men's side, the team continued their dominance in the Discus Throw finishing 1-2-3 for the second time this season. It is also the fourth straight week, they took home the top two spots.
Alec Jones led the way at 56.39m, just shy of his career-best. Charlie Vernoy finished one centimeter behind with a mark of 56.38m, also just shy of his personal best. Third place went to Sebastian Coleman, who shattered his personal best with a throw of 54.14m.
In the men's Hammer Throw, Jones came out in third with a career-best 59.95m throw. Anthony Sommers finished fifth at 57.47m and Anthony Flores set a new personal best at 57.41m which gave him a sixth place finish.
Marcos Gonzalez rounded out the throws with his second win of the season in Javelin, setting a personal best at 61.76m. It was a dominant win, as all six of his throws beat the second-place finisher.
"It was a very productive day for the throwers," said Throws Coach Cory Loebl. "Overall, we saw consistency from our top end, along with the ability to show how practice and training is making this group better. Every week, we are showing positive results and we continue our hunger for more!"
The first event on the track was the women's 800m where the Beach took home third and fourth place finishes led by Anitha Graves' 2:13.09 time. Ryley Fick was right behind her at 2:13.57, a season-best for the sophomore. With that time, Fick has now qualified for the Big West Championships in four different events.

In what would be the final event for the Beach on Friday, Michael Simpson would come out with a second-place finish in the men's 1500m Run. His time of 4:05.31 marks a new personal best for the sophomore.
Long Beach State will close out their first event at the Jack Rose Track tomorrow with the Jumps and Sprints.
