LONG BEACH, Calif. – In another close contest that went down to the final seconds, Long Beach State found itself on the wrong end of a tough overtime battle against Hawai'i as the Beach fell, 76-73 (OT), on Saturday evening at the Walter Pyramid.
Long Beach State (11-7, 10-6 Big West) and Hawai'i (7-6, 6-5 Big West) fought each other through a challenging overtime contest which saw both teams shoot at least 40-percent from the field. The Big West Conference foes battled each other through 13 ties and as many lead changes in the back-and-forth affair.
After finding themselves down two (39-37) at halftime, the Beach looked like they found their rhythm in the third quarter as they connected on 9-of-15 field goals. LBSU was led by Jasmine Hardy's career-high 24-point performance which saw her score 11 points in the third quarter alone as she went a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and 3-for-3 from long distance. Hardy's offensive explosion helped the Beach outscore the 'Bows 23-13 in the frame as Long Beach State took a 60-52 lead into the fourth quarter.
However, the Rainbow Wahine found their stride in the fourth quarter as the visitors shot 54.5 percent and limited the Beach to just nine points in the frame. Hawaii's Amy Atwell hit a three to tie the game at 69-69 with 1:57 left to play and neither team was able to break through and win in regulation.
The overtime period began close as the two teams traded points early. With the score even at 73-all and less than one minute remaining, Hawai'i took a two-point advantage on a jumper from Kelsie Imai with just 26 seconds left on the clock. The Beach called for a timeout and gave the ball to Justina King, whose layup just missed.
After fouling the 'Bows and Hawai'i taking a 76-73 lead, Naomi Hunt let a jumper fly with just 2 seconds on the clock. Unfortunately, the shot missed as Hawai'i claimed the overtime contest.
Hardy led the Beach with her career-best showing of 24 points, and was just one rebound shy of a double-double. She also added two assists, one steal, and one block, while shooting 8-for-12 from the field and making 3-of-4 three-pointers. She was also 5-for-6 from the line.
The Beach had four players score in double figures as King finished with 14 points, while Ma'Qhi Berry added 12, and Hunt posted 11.
Hawai'i was led by Atwell who concluded the game with 23 points, while Kasey Newubert finished with 14, and Imai and Jaydnn Alexander each registered 10.
Long Beach State looks to snap its six-game losing streak next week when it takes on UC Irvine on Friday, March 5 and Saturday, March 6 to close out the regular season. Both games will be played at the Bren Events Center in Irvine, Calif., and will start at 4 p.m.
