Strong Second Half Lifts Long Beach State Over Rhode Island, 64-52

Maddi Utti scores 22, while Kianna Hamilton-Fisher has a career-high 16 point in the Beach win

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Long Beach State went on a 17-0 run in the third quarter and never looked back as the Beach handed Rhode Island its first loss of the season defeating the Rams, 64-52, to close out the UVA Cavalier Classic on Sunday.
Long Beach State shot 50.9-percent from the field to remain undefeated and improve to 6-0 on the year, while Rhode Island fell to 7-1 on the season.
After falling behind, 31-23, in the first half, Long Beach State came out firing in the second half as the Beach connected on 11-of-16 field goals for a hot 68.8-shooting percentage. While the offense was on fire, the defense was on point as well. LBSU limited Rhode Island to just 11.1-percent shooting in the frame en route to outscoring the Rams 25-5 in the third quarter. The Beach used a 17-0 scoring run in the third to break the game open and take a 48-36 lead into the final 10 minutes of action.
Although the Rams found their groove in the fourth and matched the Beach's 54.5-field goal percentage, Long Beach State's comfortable lead from the third quarter allowed the Beach to continue to hold a comfortable lead as LBSU came away with a 12-point victory (64-52).
Maddi Utti led the Long Beach State offense with a season-high 22 points, while also leading the squad with six rebounds, five steals, five assists, and two blocks. Utti led a trio of double-digit scorers that included Kianna Hamilton-Fisher's career-high 16 points and Justina King's 12-point showing.
King also added four steals, while Hamilton-Fisher contributed three to go along with Ma'Qhi Berry's three steals. Berry would also add eight points, five assists, two rebounds, and one block.
Rhode Island was led by Emmanuelle Tahane's 18-point performance, while Dolly Cairns added 10 points of her own.
The Beach forced Rhode Island into 29 turnovers, which led to 27 LBSU points. LBSU finished with 17 steals and as many assists en route to extending their winning streak to six.
Long Beach State will continue its road swing on Sunday, Dec. 5 when the Beach take on Air Force in Colorado Springs.
