Long Beach State Remains Undefeated with a Victory at Air Force

Justina King led all scorers with 15 points, while Myrrah Joseph picked up a career-high four steals

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.
– The game went down to the final buzzer, but Long Beach State came out on top as the Beach pulled out a 50-49 victory over Air Force to improve to a perfect 7-0 on the year.

With the win, Long Beach State matches the program's best start since the 1985-86 season, while Air Force drops to 4-4 on the year.

Long Beach State opened the game on a 12-0 run, and held a 16-5 lead over Air Force by the end of the first quarter. However, the Falcons would not quit as they chipped away at the Beach's lead. Long Beach State held a 23-15 lead over the hosts at halftime.

Justina King had 11 points in the first half as she carried the Beach offense. King would finish the game with a team-leading 15 points.

The Beach defense was solid throughout holding Air Force to just 20.0-percent shooting from the field in the first half and a 28.3-shooting percentage in the game.

Despite the Beach's large lead to open the game and their stout defense, Air Force continued to whittle away at Long Beach State's lead. The Falcons managed to outscore the Beach 18-12 in the third quarter and make it a two-point game (35-33) heading into the final quarter.

Long Beach State held the lead the whole way, however, Air Force clipped the Beach's lead down to one on several occasions in the fourth quarter. After a made three from Air Force's Audrey Gadison with 1.0 second remaining, the Beach held a 50-49 edge before turning the ball over to the Falcons. After back-to-back timeouts from LBSU and Air Force, respectively, the Falcons had possession with 1.0 second remaining as the Beach led by one. However, Long Beach State showed off its defensive prowess as the clock expired as Maddi Utti picked off the inbound pass to help the Beach secure the victory.

Utti would finish the game with a team-leading seven rebounds, five points, three steals, two blocks, and one assist. In addition to her 15-point showing, King added three boards, three assists, and three steals. Ma'Qhi Berry also added a trio of steals, while Myrrah Joseph led the squad with four steals to go along with six points, five rebounds, and one assist.

Air Force was led by Riley Snyder and Briana Autrey-Thompson who tallied 13 and 12 points, respectively. Haley Jones led the Falcons on boards with 13 to go along with eight points.

Long Beach State will take its winning streak on the road to Eugene, Ore., as the Beach face No. 18 Oregon on Saturday, December 11 at 1 p.m.
