Women's Hoops Hits the Road for the UVA Cavalier Classic
Long Beach State women's basketball looks to extend its winning streak this week as they participate in the UVA Cavalier Classic hosted by Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. The Beach open the tournament against Richmond on Friday, November 26 at 11:30 a.m. (PT) / 2:30 p.m. (ET). The Beach will then close out the tournament on Sunday, November 28 against Rhode Island at 10 a.m. (PT) / 1 p.m. (ET) in a pair of neutral site contests.

About the Beach
• Long Beach State has opened the season with a perfect 4-0 record marking the best start under head coach Jeff Cammon, who is in his fifth year at the helm of the program.
• The last time the Beach kicked off the year with at least four-straight wins was in the 1985-86 season under legendary head coach Joan Bonvicini. That year LBSU went 7-0 to start the season.
• The Beach were chosen to finish fourth in the Big West Preseason Coaches' Poll and second in the league's preseason media poll.
• Long Beach State returns nine letterwinners from a year ago including Big West All-Conference selections Justina King, Ma'Qhi Berry, and Patricia Chung.
• The Beach also welcome six newcomers - four transfers and two freshmen - highlighted by 2020 Mountain West Player of the Year Maddi Utti.
• A defensively strong team, the Beach are averaging 13.0 steals per game, while forcing 23.5 turnovers per game, and holding opponents to a 53.0 points per game average.
• Long Beach State has averaged 73.3 points per game over four games thus far, holding a 20.3 scoring margin over opponents.
• As a team, LBSU is out-rebounding its opponents 34.0 to 32.5 for a 2.5 rebounding margin.

Player Notes
• Justina King leads the Beach in scoring the season with 13.3 points per game. In just four games, King has led the team in scoring twice this season, reaching double-digit three times. In her career, she has accumulated 1,032 points and ranks in the top 25 at Long Beach State.
• Joining King as the team's leading scorer is junior guard Jasmine Hardy. Hardy had a career-game against Seattle last Thursday as she poured in a career-best 29 points on 11-of-14 made field goals and 7-of-9 made threes. She became just the fourth player in the Jeff Cammon era to reach at least 25 points in a game. She has led the Beach in scoring twice this season with a pair of double-figure scoring showings.
• Maddi Utti made her Long Beach State debut and led the Beach with a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds) and has since continued to excel on the court for the Beach averaging 10.0 points per game and 8.3 rebounds per game. Utti has recorded two double-figure scoring games, while leading the Beach in rebounding in each game this season. She also leads the squad with 17 assists,11 steals, and three blocks.
• Ma'Qhi Berry has been a force on the court this season contributing on both sides of the ball. Offensively, she averages 8.3 points per game with 12 assists, to go along with 2.8 rebounds per game. On the defensive end, Berry leads the way with three blocks, while adding five steals.
• Lauren Green has started in all four games this season and has played an important role on the court. Although her numbers aren't overpowering (1.0 ppg, 1.5 rpg, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block), Green is a play maker. She makes things happen for the Beach both offensively and defensively and is a key component to the squad's success.
• Off the bench, Kianna Hamilton-Fisher is averaging 9.5 points per game and has recorded two double-digit scoring games thus far. She also contributes 2.8 rebounds per game to go along with 10 steals, three assists, and on block over four games.
• Patricia Chung is another cog in the Long Beach State wheel of success as the freshman guard is averaging 4.8 points per game and 0.8 rebounds per game. The scrappy Chung has helped contribute to the Beach's solid defensive efforts with a pair of steals and her stout defending.
• Myrrah Joseph has seen action in all four of the Beach's games this season and has been on the court for 46 minutes. In that time she is averaging 4.3 points per game and 1.3 rebounds per game, while adding six assists, and two steals.
• Freshman Savannah Tucker has also played an important role for the Beach as she is coming off of a career-high 10-point game against Seattle. Tucker connected on 3-of-5 field goals in that game and sunk four free throws for her first collegiate double-figure scoring game. On the year, she is averaging 3.5 points per game to go along with 0.8 rebounds per game, two assists, and one steal.
• Thea Mikkelsen came to the Beach all the way from Roskilde, Denmark and in her collegiate debut tallied 10 points against Biola. Since her 10-point showing in the season opener, Mikkelsen averaged 3.5 points per game, 1.3 rebounds per game, while adding three assists, and two steals in 29 minutes of action.
• Kristyna Jeskeova is another key factor to the Beach's deep bench. In just 23 minutes of action over four games, she has totaled six points, 11 rebounds, five steals, two assists, and two steals.
• Brandy Huffhines made her collegiate debut for the Beach in the season opener against Biola. She has since seen action against Seattle as well. She has been on the court for 15 minutes of action this season and has helped the Beach with two points and one steal.
• Emily Sullivan has also been on the court in two games this season for a total of 11 minutes in which she has contributed three rebounds.
• Redshirting for Long Beach State this season are freshmen Shelby Ray and Teodora Popvic.
Scouting Richmond
• Richmond comes into the UVA Cavalier Classic with a 2-2 overall record.
• Last week, the Spiders went 1-1 with a 71-50 loss to Elon and a 76-64 win over UMBC.
• The Spiders are averaging 66.8 points per game, while shooting 43.0-percent from the field.
• Richmond owns a 5.5 scoring margin on its opponents and is being out-rebounded 43.0 to 37.8.
• Additionally, Richmond is averaging 16.5 assists per game, 7.3 steals per game, and an impressive 10.3 blocks per game.
• Leading the Spiders in scoring this season is Addie Budnik with 14.8 points per game. She is also the team's leading rebounder with 7.3 boards per game.
• The versatile Budnik does it all for the Spiders as she also leads the squad with a whopping 23 blocks and 13 assists.
• Also averaging double-digits for the Spiders is Siobahn Ryan who is averaging 10.8 points per game to go along with 3.3 rebounds per game, six assists, three steals, and one block.
The Series: The Beach vs. The Spiders
Long Beach State and Richmond will meet for just the third time in program history. The Beach leads the all-time series 2-0. In their two previous meetings, Long Beach State defeated Richmond 59-51 on Nov. 26, 2005, and 73-61 on Dec. 20, 2013. Both games were played at the Walter Pyramid. This will be the teams' first meeting outside of California.
Scouting Rhode Island
• Rhode Island brings a flawless 6-0 record to the UVA Cavalier Classic.
• The Rams have breezed through early season competition with several convincing wins over Dartmouth, Meerimack, Coppin State, Providence, Princeton, and Harvard.
• As a team, the Rams are outscoring their opponents 76.7 to 46.0 for an impressive 30.7 scoring margin.
• Rhode Island is shooting 46.8-percent from the field and 41.9-percent from long distance while averaging 8.7 three-pointers per game.
• Rhody has four scorers averaging double-figures in Marie-Paule Foppossi (13.2 ppg), Dolly Cairns (13.0 ppg), Emmanuelle Tahane (12.3 ppg), and Dez Elmore (12.2 ppg).
• Tahane and Elmore also average double-digits in rebounding as well with 11.3 and 10.0 rebounds per game, respectively.
• Foppossi has distributed a team-leading 18 assists to go along with seven steals, and five blocks.
• Elmore is the team's leader in steals with 10, while Maye Toure leads the Rams with eight blocks.

Defensively Strong
With Long Beach State returning most of its team from last season, including Justina King and Ma'Qhi Berry who were named to the 2020-21 Big West All-Defensive Team, the Beach's defense looks to continue to be strong. The well-established Beach defense has led the Big West in steals multiple times over the last several seasons, including last year in which the Beach led the league with 11.43 steals per set. In just four games thus far, Long Beach State is averaging 13.0 steals per game, while forcing opponents into 23.5 turnovers per game to lead the Big West Conference.
A Grand Time
Junior guard Justina King became the 26th player in Long Beach State women's basketball program history to record 1,000 points in her career. King reached the milestone on November 13 at Boise State as she recorded a team-leading 16 points in the Beach's 61-38 victory. King joins the elite company of All-Americans LaTaunya Pollard (3,001 career points), Cindy Brown (2,696 career points), Penny Toler (2,193 career points), and Kirsten Cummings (1,740 career points). Most recently, King moved up to 25th all-time with 1,032 career points.
Hardy Makes it Look Easy
Junior Jasmine Hardy had a career-day as she led Long Beach State over Seattle last Thursday with a career-high 29 point performance. Hardy was firing on all cylinders as she connected on 11-of-14 field goals to shoot an impressive 78.6-percent from the field. Seven of her 11 field goals were from three-point range as she went 7-for-9 from long distance for a hot 77.8-percentage from behind the arc. Hardy has now led the Beach in scoring twice this season and is tied for th team lead with 13.3 points per game.
Mad(di) Skills
Senior forward Maddi Utti showed off her skills in her Long Beach State debut as she led the team with 12 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, three steals, and one block. The transfer from Fresno State, and 2020 Mountain West Player of the Year, currently is averaging 10.0 points per game and leading the Beach with 8.3 rebounds per game. Her 17 assists and 11 steals are also tops on the squad.
Berry Good
Ma'Qhi Berry has been an integral part for the Beach as she has consistently contributed on both sides of the ball in her Long Beach State career. In just four games thus far, Berry is averaging 8.3 points per game to go along with 2.8 rebounds per game. The redshirt junior guard out of Irving, Texas also adds 12 assists, five steals, and is tied for the team lead with three blocks.
Ki Component
Kianna Hamilton-Fisher has been a key component for the Beach as she has come off the bench and made an impact in each game thus far. Hamilton-Fisher is averaging 9.5 points per game and has recorded double-digit performances on two occasions. She also averages 2.8 rebounds per game to go along with 10 steals, three assists, and one block.
