Jeff Cammon enters his sixth season at the helm of the Long Beach State Women’s Basketball program. Since his hiring in May of 2017, Cammon has led the Beach to the Big West Conference Tournament five times with two first round appearances and a trio of quarterfinal showings.

Cammon’s squad kicked off the 2021-22 season on a seven-game winning streak marking the program’s best start to the season since 1985-86. The Beach went on to boast a 19-9 overall record, the best in the Cammon era thus far, en route to earning a No. 3 seed in The Big West Conference Tournament after putting together a 12-6 league mark.

Despite losing in the Big West Tournament Quarterfinals, the Beach’s strong showing throughout the season earned them an at-large bid to the 2022 WNIT. It was LBSU’s first appearance in the WNIT in the Cammon Era and the fifth appearance overall. The Beach turned in a solid outing, but ultimately fell to Oregon State, 70-59.

Under Cammon’s leadership, Long Beach State had three players earn All-Big West Conference Honors as senior Maddi Utti was named to the All-First Team and was named Best Defensive Player, while Justina King earned Second Team accolades, and Jasmine Hardy was an Honorable Mention selection.

In a shortened 2020-21 season, due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Cammon’s Beach went on a 10-game winning streak, the program’s longest such streak since the 1987-88 season. Long Beach State earned a No. 3 seed in the Big West Tournament, the highest seed under Cammon’s tutelage and garnered three All-Big West Conference selections in Justina King (All-First Team and All-Defensive Team), Ma’Qhi Berry (All-Defensive Team), and Patricia Chung (All-Freshman Team). Long Beach State concluded the season with a 12-9 overall record and went 11-7 in Big West Conference action.

The 2019-20 season saw Long Beach State collect 13 victories and post an 8-8 record in the Big West Conference to earn a No. 5 seed in the conference tournament marking the squad’s highest seeding since Cammon took the reins of the program. The Beach used a four-game winning streak in the middle of the season with victories over CSUN (60-52), Hawaii (62-55), at UC Irvine (56-46), and a double overtime win over UC Riverside (73-67).

Cammon’s team finished the regular season with back-to-back wins over Cal State Fullerton (52-49) and UC Davis (66-57) before ending the year in the First Round of the Big West Conference Tournament in a 59-48 setback to No. 8 seed Cal Poly.

Under Cammon’s tutelage, sophomore guard Justina King continued her solid level of play as she led the team with 13.6 points per game and 97 assists. She also added 2.0 rebounds per game, 53 steals, and one block en route to being named to the Big West Conference All-Second Team as well as to the league’s All-Defensive Team.

In his second year at the Beach, Cammon led Long Beach State to a quarterfinal appearance in the Big West Conference Tournament after knocking off Cal State Fullerton in the first round. During the regular season, the Beach won four-straight games picking up victories over Grand Canyon (57-50), at Utah State (50-48), at UC Riverside (63-45) to kick off conference action, and against Cal Poly (61-58).

Under Cammon’s tutelage, freshman guard Justina King had a breakout season as she led the team with 107 assists and was third on the team in scoring with 9.2 points per game. Her solid rookie season earned her Big West Freshman on the Year honors as she became just the third LBSU women’s basketball player to earn in the honor and the first since 2011.

Cammon’s squad saw sophomore Naomi Hunt continue her efficiency from three-point range as she drained 62 treys for a shooting percentage of 39.7. Her average of 10.8 points per game was second on the team as she was selected to the All-Big West Second Team.

Rounding out Cammon’s Big West All-Conference selections was sophomore Shanaijah Davison who earned Honorable Mention status after leading the Beach with 14.0 points per game and 48 steals.

In his first season, Cammon took a young squad that had 10 underclassmen and persevered through a tough start to ultimately win five of the team’s final six games, showcasing the dedication and commitment to improvement which is a key part of the culture of the program.

Highlighting that turnaround were a pair of All-Freshman Team selections in Shanaijah Davison and Naomi Hunt. Davison was the team’s leading scorer at 13.8 points per game as a freshman, while Hunt added 8.0 points per game while shooting 44.0 percent from three. Both players earned Honorable Mention All-Big West honors as well.

Cammon returned to the Beach in 2017 after having served as an assistant coach for Long Beach State from 2008-14. He brings a wealth of coaching experience after having spent time at Cal and Colorado before making his return to LBSU.

Cammon was part of former Long Beach State head coach Jody Wynn's first coaching staff at the Beach, spending five years with LBSU. During his first stint with the Beach, Cammon was instrumental in the team's turnaround.

In his first season with the team, Long Beach State finished over .500 in conference play for the first time in four years, and then two years later, reached the Big West Tournament finals.

In 2012-13, Long Beach State made its first postseason appearance in over ten years, earning a selection into the WNIT. In each of Cammon's five seasons at Long Beach State the Beach reached the Big West Tournament.

Cammon left LBSU to join the coaching staff at Cal, where he helped lead the Golden Bears to the 2014-15 Pac-12 Conference Championship game as well as to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. During his time in Berkley, Cal posted a 40-27 record.

His final stop as an assistant coach before returning to LBSU was at Colorado, where he once again played a big part in a major turnaround. Doubling the team's win total from a season earlier, Colorado went 17-16 overall and started the season 10-0, including a win over a ranked Kentucky team. The Buffaloes also picked up a win No. 24 California on the road, the first away win over a ranked opponent for CU since 2007.

Prior to coaching at the Beach, Cammon spent two years as the head girls' varsity coach at Bishop Alemany High School in Mission Hills, Calif., where he also taught history.

He also coached on the men's side as an assistant at Kentucky Wesleyan, Chaffey CC and his alma mater, Alcorn State.

A three-year starter at point guard with the Braves, Cammon was the team captain for two years and led Alcorn State to three conference championships and an NCAA Tournament appearance.

Cammon graduated from Alcorn State in 2003 with a bachelor's degree in political science, and then completed a master's degree in physical education two years later in 2005.
