Women’s Basketball Wins Fourth Straight With 73-67 2OT Victory Over UC Riverside

Justina King scored 13 of her 18 points in the two overtime periods to lift the Beach over the Highlanders

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Sophomore guard Justina King scored 13 of her 18 points in the two overtime periods to help lift Long Beach State to a 73-67 double-overtime victory against UC Riverside on Thursday night at the Walter Pyramid.
The Beach have now won four-straight contests as they improve to 10-10 overall and 5-2 in Big West Conference action. Meanwhile, the Highlanders drop to 6-14 and 2-4 in league play.
King led LBSU in scoring with 18 total points after heating up in the final 10 minutes of action. Additionally, she finished the game with four assists, two steals, and a pair of rebounds. Also contributing to the Beach's offensive attack were Shanaijah Davison (15 points) and Ma'Qhi Berry (14 points). Davison added four boards to go along with one steal and one assist, while Berry contributed six steals, five assists, four rebounds and one block in another solid outing.
Senior forward Aaryon Green notched a new career-high with 12 rebounds as she led the Beach on boards, while also swiping five steals, and adding four points, one block, and one assist.
The Beach shot 34.2 percent in the game, while knocking down 7-of-13 field goals for a 53.8 percentage in the two overtime periods. Long Beach State collected 19 steals in the game while forcing UC Riverside into 27 turnovers as the Beach converted 26 points.
UC Riverside opened the game with an early bucket, but LBSU used a 10-0 run to jump out in front (10-2). The Beach led the Highlanders the remainder of the first half taking a 25-21 lead into halftime.
With the Beach up by four to start the second half, the Highlanders knocked down six-straight points to take their first lead (27-25) since 9:39 in the first quarter. The lead didn't last long as Jasmine Hardy drained a three 25 seconds later as LBSU regained the lead. From there, the conference foes battled each other back and forth until UCR held a one-point edge (35-34) at the end of three quarters.
The fourth quarter was much like the third with both teams trading points and battling each other back-and-forth. King gave the Beach a 46-45 lead after sinking both free throws with 3:06 left in regulation. Davison tacked on two more points with a made layup as LBSU was in the driver's seat with a 48-45 advantage and 2:38 left on the clock.
However, foul trouble doomed the Beach as UCR's Keilanei Cooper sunk two free throws at 1:43 to make it a one-point game (48-47). After King put LBSU back up by two (49-47) another costly foul send Jannon Otto to the line with just 1.5 seconds left in regulation. Otto made both free throws to send it into overtime.
A gritty performance on both sides in the first overtime period saw both teams tally nine points. As the clock wound down forcing a second overtime.
Heading into the final overtime period, King had nine points after having scored four in the first overtime. The Scarborough, Canada native lit it up as she doubled her point total in the final five minutes of action. Her nine points score in the second overtime period, matched UC Riverside's point total in the frame as she led the Beach to a 73-67 victory as she was 3-for-3 from the field with one three, and made both free throws.
The Beach is now 2-0 this season in overtime contests as they defeated Air Force, 74-68 in overtime, on Dec. 18.
Long Beach State looks to extend its winning streak this weekend when it heads to Honolulu to take on Hawaii on Saturday, Feb. 1. Tip-off is set for 8:30 p.m. (PT).
