Strong Defense Leads LBSU to 56-46 Win Over UC Irvine in Black & Blue Rivalry Game

Jasmine Hard leads the Beach with 13 points, while Lauren Green posts a season-high 10 rebounds

IRVINE, Calif. – In a defensively strong game on both sides, Long Beach State pulled ahead of UC Irvine to defeat the Anteaters 56-46 on Saturday afternoon in the Black & Blue Rivalry Game at the Bren Events Center.
The Beach (9-10, 4-2 Big West) were led by Jasmine Hardy's 13 points, while Cydnee Kinslow added 10, and Shanaijah Davison and Aaryon Green each contributed nine. Lauren Green was solid on boards as she racked up a season-high 10 rebounds to go along with four points, two blocks, one steal, and one assist.
Long Beach State limited UC Irvine (5-14, 1-4 Big West) to just six points in the final quarter, which proved to be the difference maker in the game. The Anteaters were stymied by the Beach defense as they shot 7.1 percent from the field (1-for-14) in the final quarter. Meanwhile, LBSU was 6-for-10 from the field as the Beach outscored the Anteaters 15-6 in the fourth to win by 10.
LBSU used a 12-0 run to take an 11-5 lead in the first as the Beach held the lead for the remainder of the first half. Long Beach State extended its lead up to 10 (20-10) to open the second quarter, but UC Irvine cut the Beach's lead down to four (20-16) after knocking down six-straight points.
The Anteaters continued to chip away and tied the game at 25-25 with 2:13 remaining in the first half, before Hardy hit a jumper with just 14 seconds left on the clock to send Long Beach State into halftime with a 27-25 lead.
Following the break in action, the conference foes battled each other to a 31-31 tie with 7:13 on the clock in the third quarter. From there, UC Irvine took its first lead over LBSU since the first quarter on a jumper from Sophia Locandro which put the Anteaters up 35-34 with 4:19 left in the quarter. UCI extended its lead up to three (37-34) following a jumper from Joy Akaegbu-Cleveland, but the Beach were quick to stop the bleeding and regain their lead with a 7-0 run highlighted by a three from Kinslow to put LBSU up 41-37 with 2:40.
The Beach took a one-point lead (41-40) into the fourth quarter before opening up the final 10 minutes of action scoring six-straight points to take a 47-40 advantage. Long Beach State's solid defense held UC Irvine to just six points in the final quarter as the Beach tallied 15 points to push their lead back up to double-figures as Long Beach State earned its third-straight win.
UC Irvine was led by Haleigh Talbert's 15 points and Lauren Saiki's 12 – which all came from long distance. Locandro finished the game with seven points and as many rebounds, while Saiki led the squad with six assists and six steals.
Long Beach State looks to extend its winning streak to four when the Beach host UC Riverside at the Walter Pyramid on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m.
