Women's Basketball Continues Road Swing at Santa Clara, Seattle
Following the team's second-place finish at the Cal Classic last week, Long Beach State continues its longest road swing of the season as the Beach take on Santa Clara and Seattle University. LBSU will face the Broncos on Friday, Dec. 6 at 5 p.m., before going up against the Redhawks on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m.

About The Beach
• Long Beach State owns a 2-5 record after splitting a pair of games last week at the Cal Classic. The Beach knocked off Big Ten powerhouse Penn State, 64-56, before dropping a 68-45 contest to the host Bears.
• The Beach are averaging 61.3 points per game as they have connected on 157-of-411 field goals for a shooting percentage of 38.2.
• As a team, Long Beach State is averaging 33.4 rebounds per game to go along with 11.0 assists per game, 11.1 steals per game, and 2.3 blocks per game.
• LBSU leads the Big West in steals per game (11.1) and turnover margin (+6.0) as the Beach have forced their opponents into 144 turnovers this season.
• Sophomore Justina King leads the team with 14.1 points per game, while junior Shanaijah Davison adds 13.3 points per game.
• King was named to the Cal Classic All-Tournament team after finishing the week with 29 points, five assists, four steals, and two rebounds
• Cydnee Kinslow is the team's leading rebounder with 7.4 boards per game. She has racked up three double rebounding games so far and has led the squad in boards on four occasions.
• Kinslow also leads the Beach in steals with 15, while Ma'Qhi Berry and Justina King are right behind her with 14 and 13 steals, respectively.
• In addition to leading the squad in scoring, King is also the Beach's leader in assists with 24 to average 3.4 assists per game to rank eighth in the Big West.
• Lauren Green is the team's leader in blocks as the sophomore forward has put up five on the year so far, while Kinslow is right behind her with four and Jasmine Hardy has contributed three.
• Long Beach State has officially changed the nickname for all sports other than baseball to Beach with the NCAA. Please do not refer to LBSU basketball as the 49ers.
Scouting Santa Clara
Santa Clara is 4-3 on the year and the Broncos are coming off of a tough 81-80 overtime loss to Delaware last weekend.
As a team, the Broncos are shooting 44.1 percent from the field and 32.4 percent from long distance, while connecting on 105-of-137 free throws for a percentage of 76.6. The squad averages 74.0 points per game, while holding opponents to 66.9 points per game for a scoring margin of +8.0.
Tia Hay is the Broncos' leading scorer with 14.6 points per game, while Ashlyn Herlihy adds 11.1 points per game. Herlihy also leads the team with 7.1 rebounds per game, while Lauren Yearwood is right behind her with 7.0 boards per game.
In addition to leading the team in scoring, Hay also has dished out a team-high 27 assists, while Yearwood leads the team with 11 blocks to go along with six steals. Joining her with six swipes on the year is Merle Wiehl, who also contributes 9.9 points per game.
The Series: The Beach vs. The Broncos
Long Beach State and Santa Clara will meet for the fifth time in program history and the Broncos lead the all-time series 4-0, as the Beach are in search of their first-ever victory over Santa Clara. The teams will meet for the first time since 2012, when the Broncos edged LBSU 68-67.
Scouting Seattle
Seattle is 2-6 on the season and is coming off of a 73-65 loss to Montana State. The Redhawks' two wins on the year have come against Saint Martin's (91-81) and Central Washington (75-65).
The Redhawks average 69.0 points per game, but opponents have averaged 77.2 points per game. Seattle shoots 38.2 percent from the field, 28.5 percent from behind the arc, and 67.7 percent from the line.
Kamira Sanders is the team's leading scorer with 19.3 points per game as she leads a trio of double-figure scorers in Courtney Murphy (12.5 ppg) and Joana Alves (10.3 ppg). In addition to contributing 10.3 points per game, Alves also leads teh team in rebounding with 6.9 boards per game.
Sanders, meanwhile, also sets the tone for the Redhawks with 21 assits and 19 steals, to go along with four blocks - all team highs.
The Series: The Beach vs. The Redhawks
Long Beach State and Seattle will meet for the fifth time in program history. The overall series is tied at 2-2 with the Redhawks winning the first two games, and the Beach emerging victorious in the last two games. Sunday's contest marks the first time since 2015 the two teams will meet. In that last contest, LBSU defeated Seattle, 69-57.
Offensive Output
The Beach have a pair of players averaging double-figures. Additionally, in seven games thus far, Long Beach State has already seen three different players turn in 20-point performances. Sophomore Justina King leads the Beach with 14.1 points per game after notching a pair of 20-point efforts. She most recently poured in a season-high 23 points against LMU. Second on the squad in scoring is junior Shanaijah Davison who is averaging 13.3 points per game in six games played. She, along with redshirt sophomore Ma'Qhi Berry, have each registered a 20-point performance for LBSU this season.
Defensively Strong
Long Beach State has been defensively sound this season as the Beach lead the Big West Conference in steals with 78 to average 11.2 pet game. LBSU has forced 144 turnovers (10.6 per game) as the team boasts a turnover margin of +5.0 to lead the conference. Additionally, the Beach have limited opponents to 66.0 points per game which is good for third in the Big West.
Cleaning up the Glass
Senior forward Cydnee Kinslow is leading the rebounding charge for Long Beach State. She has grabbed double-digit boards in three of the Beach's seven games so far to average 7.4 rebounds per game. The Oakley, Calif., native has done a solid job cleaning up the glass as she collected 11 rebounds at California Baptist in the season opener, then turned around and registered 11 boards at No. 11 UCLA. She set a new career-high with 12 rebounds against Utah State en route to a double-double as she added 13 points.
King is Queen
The 2018-19 Big West Conference Freshman of the Year, Justina King, has picked up right where she left off. The sophomore guard, who led the Beach in assists a year ago (107), has dished out 24 assists this season to set the pace for LBSU. Additionally, she adds a team-leading 14.1 points per game to go along with 2.0 rebounds per game, and 13 steals in seven games so far. Most recently, King totaled 29 points, five assists, four steals, and two rebounds at the Cal Classic to help the Beach to a second-place finish as she was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Berry Good
Redshirt sophomore Ma'Qhi Berry returned to the court after redshirting a year ago and has made an immediate impact for Long Beach State. The guard out of Irving, Texas is averaging 8.7 points per game to go along with 2.9 rebounds per game, while adding 14 steals and nine assists. She racked up a career-high 22 points against Loyola Marymont and has recorded three double-figure performances thus far. Berry has been efficient from the field shooting 54.8 percent as she has connected on 23-of-42 field goals.
Up Next
Long Beach State will return home to host No. 3 Oregon on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 1 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid. The contest will mark just the second ranked team the Beach has played this season, and the first top-10 program.
