SANTA CLARA, Calif. –
In a defensively charged game, Long Beach State held Santa Clara to its lowest points total of the season as the Beach earned a 54-46 victory on Friday night at the Leavey Center.

LBSU (3-5) used a complete team effort as every player who saw action scored, while the defense forced Santa Clara (4-4) into 26 turnovers, the most committed by the Broncos this season. Coming into the game, the Broncos averaged 13.0 turnovers and were averaging a West Coast Conference leading 74.9 points per game. Long Beach State's strong showing earned the Beach their first-ever victory over the Broncos as LBSU had dropped the previous four meetings to Santa Clara in the all-time series..

Santa Clara opened the game shooting 60 percent as the Broncos connected on 6-of-10 field goals. But the difference maker in the first quarter was from long distance as the hosts knocked down 5-of-8 treys to shoot 62.5 percent as the Broncos led 17-11 at the end of the first quarter.

After SCU took a nine-point advantage (20-11) over LBSU to start the second quarter, the Beach settled in and found their groove. Long Beach State chipped away and cut the Broncos' lead down to two (26-24) on a three from Justina King with less than a minute remaining in the half. Santa Clara sent it to halftime up four (28-24) after a Lauren Yearwood layup with 27 seconds left.

The Beach came out of the break and outscored the Broncos 16-4 in the third quarter, while limiting SCU to just 18.2 percent from the field (2-for-11). Long Beach State used a 12-0 run sparked by a layup by Lauren Green at 8:56 to make it a two-point game (30-28). The Beach led by as many as eight in the frame, before taking a 40-32 lead into the final 10 minutes of action.

Long Beach State continued to control the game during the fourth quarter as the Beach extended their lead up to double-digits (51-41) on a layup from Ma'Qhi Berry at 5:14. The Broncos managed to cut the Beach's lead down to five (51-48), but that was as close as LBSU would allow them to get as Long Beach State would go on to win, 54-46.

Sophomore Jasmine Hardy led the Beach with 15 points, while Shanaijah Davison came off the bench to add 11 points. King contributed eight points to go along with three assists, and two steals.

Berry led the defense with five steals to tie her career-high. She also registered six points, three rebounds, and two assists.

Santa Clara's Ashlyn Herlihy (15 points) and Yearwood (12 points) led the Broncos, while Lindsey Van Allen added 10 boards, while Tia Hay dished out seven assists, and Yearwood added four blocks.

Long Beach State continues its road swing at Seattle on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m.
