Slow Start Dooms Beach in Loss to USC at the Women of Troy Classic

LOS ANGELES – The Long Beach State women's basketball team was unable to overcome a slow start as the Beach dropped a 57-40 decision to USC in the final game of the Women of Troy Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Long Beach State (5-8) struggled in the first half, shooting just 14.3 percent (4-for-28) from the field as the Beach trailed USC (8-3), 29-12, at halftime.
The Beach came back stronger in the second half and matched the Trojans point-for-point in the third and fourth quarters, but the damage had been done. USC led Long Beach State by as many as 22 points (50-28). LBSU managed to whittle the lead down to 15 (54-39), but ultimately fell 57-40.
USC shot 43.4 percent in the game as the Trojans connected on 23-of-53 shots, while LBSU finished the game shooting 23.8 percent from the field (15-for-63).
Ma'Qhi Berry and Justina King each tallied 12 points to lead the Beach, while Berry added six rebounds, six assists, one steal and one block. King finished the game with four assists, two boards, and two steals.
Lauren Green turned in a solid performance as she finished the game with eight rebounds, seven points, and one block.
The defensively strong Beach forced the Trojans into 17 turnovers and converted 16 points. Long Beach State held the edge in steals (5-2) and blocks (7-3), but USC held the advantage in rebounding (49-31) and assists (13-11).
The Trojans had three double-figure scorers led by Kayla Overbeck's 15 points, while Angel Jackson came off the bench to add 11 points, and Alissa Pili finished with a double-double (10 points, 13 rebounds).
Long Beach State will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 4 when the Beach host Bethesda at 2 p.m. in a doubleheader with men's basketball which plays Cal State LA at 4:30 p.m.
