Beach Water Polo Splits Two Games at Final Day of Triton Invitational

Long Beach State split its two games on Sunday at the Triton Invitational, losing to UC Santa Barbara before earning an overtime victory over UC Irvine.
No. 6 Long Beach State (3-1) went 1-1 on Sunday at the Triton Invitational hosted by UC San Diego, losing to No. 10 UC Santa Barbara and defeating No. 9 UC Irvine. The Beach ends the day at 3-1 overall, dropping an 11-10 decision to the Gauchos before earning a 9-8 overtime win over UC Irvine.
In the first contest of the day, the Beach nearly pulled off an impressive comeback against the Gauchos. LBSU trailed 5-3 at halftime and 10-6 after three quarters, but won the final quarter 4-1 to get within a goal of UCSB. Chandler Kaltenbach scored with 1:14 left in the game to pull Long Beach within a goal, but Santa Barbara was able to run out the clock and preserve the one-goal victory. Kaltenbach had a second-half hat trick in defeat and Keegan Wicken scored four times to lead LBSU in the game.
In match two of the day against UC Irvine, Long Beach State again needed to come from behind after trailing 4-2 after one quarter. LBSU outscored the Anteaters 2-0 in the second quarter to even the score at 4-4 going into halftime. In the second half, both teams stayed even as they both scored twice in each of the final two frames. Neither team led by more than a goal and UCI was able to tie things up on a goal with 55 seconds remaining.
The teams were scoreless through two overtime periods before Long Beach State finally secured victory on a goal by freshman Johnathan Wong.
Austin Stewart chipped in a hat trick in the win over UC Irvine, scoring twice in the third quarter.
Long Beach State will continue its season next Saturday at the Inland Empire Classic in Redlands.
