No. 6 Men’s Water Polo Wins All Three Games at Inland Empire Classic

Long Beach State went 3-0 at the Inland Empire Classic in La Verne, Calif., earning victories over Whittier, La Verne and Chapman.
LA VERNE, Calif. -- No. 6 Long Beach State men's water polo won all three games on Saturday at the Inland Empire Classic, improving to 6-1 on the season. LBSU scored wins over Whittier, La Verne, and Chapman to remain unbeaten all-time against those three programs.
In the opening game of the day, Long Beach State easily dispatched Whittier College, 15-3, buoyed by a seven-goal outburst in the third quarter. The Beach held the Poets scoreless in the second half, causing an 18-minute scoring drought for Whittier.
James Rozsypal scored three times to pace the Beach, netting twice in the third. He was one of five different LBSU players to score in the third, helping Long Beach turn a 5-3 halftime lead into a 12-3 advantage going into the final quarter. LBSU then outscored Whittier 3-0 in the final period to pull away for the 15-3 win.
Long Beach State's offense exploded in its second match of the day, dropping La Verne by a final score of 23-9. Freshman Aaron Arias scored six goals and added six steals and a pair of assists in a terrific performance as LBSU scored at least four times in every quarter.
The Beach led 4-1 after the opening quarter and held a 12-3 edge at intermission. Thanks to a 7-1 edge in the third, LBSU held a dominant 19-4 lead going into the final quarter.
Seven different players scored multiple goals for the Beach, with Keegan Wicken chipping in a hat trick. Austin Stewart had four assists to lead LBSU in that department. Austin Stevenson and Jack McLaughlin each chipped in three steals for the Beach.
In the final game of the day, Long Beach defeated Chapman for the second time this season, securing an 18-8 victory over the Panthers. LBSU led 5-3 after the opening quarter and took a 9-4 advantage into halftime.
Stewart led the Beach with six goals in the victory, followed by Max Cusator who added four tallies. Wicken secured his second hat trick of the day and Lovro Miocevic had a pair of assists. It was a more comfortable win for Long Beach in this one after LBSU defeated Chapman 11-8 on Sep. 1.
Long Beach State will visit No. 3 California in its next contest on Sep. 14 in Berkeley.
