LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The Long Beach State men's water polo team faces its toughest test of the young season this weekend in the Bay as the No. 6-ranked Beach visit No. 3 California on Friday at 6 p.m. Long Beach has a 6-1 record on the season after winning four straight contests, but the unbeaten Golden Bears (6-0) will present a tough challenge in their home opener at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
Cal has won each of its last four games by exactly three goals, with three of those wins coming against Golden Coast Conference competition. In the Golden Bears' last match, they defeated Pacific on the road, 11-8. Cal also holds a 12-9 victory over No. 7 UC Santa Barbara, which is the only team to defeat Long Beach State this season.
LBSU went 3-0 last Saturday at the Inland Empire Classic, scoring lopsided wins over Whittier, La Verne and Chapman. Junior Austin Stewart leads the Beach with 16 goals and four assists so far this season. He's joined in double-figures in scoring by Keegan Wicken (12 goals), Chandler Kaltenbach (11 goals) and Austin Stevenson (10 goals). Freshman Aaron Arias is coming off a terrific weekend, which included a six-goal, six-steal performance against La Verne in a 23-9 victory.
Long Beach State will open its home schedule next Friday at 7 p.m., hosting No. 2 UCLA at Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
