SEATTLE, Wash. - Losing to No. 22 Washington 102-75 and Hec Edmundson Pavilion on Tuesday night was bad enough, but it got worse when Long Beach State's Larry Anderson suffered a broken left hand early in the second half. The injury ended the game for the junior guard and will sideline him for the next few weeks.
Casper Ware had 18 points to lead four 49ers in double-figures. T.J. Robinson added his fourth straight double-double with 15 points and 10 boards, while Greg Plater had 13 and Eugene Phelps chipped in 10 points. Tristan Wilson scored a career-high nine points off the bench.
C.J. Wilcox led seven Huskies in double figures with 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including 6-of-8 from 3-point range. Isaiah Thomas added 19 points and six assists, while Abdul Gaddy chipped in 17 points. Matt Bryan-Amaning scored 14 points on 7-of-7 shooting, Justin Holiday had 11 points, while Darnell Gant and Venoy Overton chipped in 10 points apiece. Overton added eight assists and three steals for the Huskies.
UW converted on 41-of-67 shots (61.2 percent), including a blistering 21-of-28 (75 percent) in the second half. The Huskies also made 14-of-26 threes, canning 10-of-13 after the break. LBSU went 26-of-61 from the floor (42.6 percent) and 8-of-19 (42.1 percent) from 3-point range.
Long Beach State scored early on a basket by Robinson to take the lead, but the Huskies ran off 10 straight before the first media timeout to take a 10-2 lead. Gaddy and Thomas combined for eight of the points as the Huskies made five of their first six shots. LBSU countered going 1-of-4 with four turnovers in the first 4:22.
Phelps snapped the UW run with a basket at the 13:30 mark, but the Huskies responded with a 9-2 run capped by a Thomas transition basket to push the lead to 19-6 with 11:48 to play in the half. Washington built the 13-point lead behind 9-of-12 shooting, while The Beach (3-4) managed to hit on just 3-of-9 shots during the stretch. LBSU also committed eight turnovers in the first eight and a half minutes, four by Ware.
Washington (4-2) extended the lead to 16 at the 10-minute mark on a three by Overton, before LBSU put together back-to-back baskets on a three by Plater and a follow by Anderson to get within 11 with 9:17 to play.
The 49ers would narrow the lead to eight at the 5:10 mark on four straight points by Robinson and a three by Ware, but the Huskies answered again this time with a 5-0 run to push the lead back to 13 on a basket by Thomas with 3:57 to play before the break. After The Beach got within eight, UW finished the half on a 16-8 run to take a 44-28 lead into the locker room.
Washington made 20-of-39 shots (51.3 percent) in the first half, while out-rebounding LBSU 20-12 including an 8-2 advantage on the offensive glass. Long Beach State also committed 12 turnovers leading to 14 first-half points for the Huskies. Thomas led Washington with 12 points in the first half, while Wilcox added 11 and Bryan-Amaning had 10.
Robinson and Plater led the Beach before the break with six points apiece, while Anderson had five. Robinson had five of LBSU's 12 first-half rebounds.
Ware came out of the break and got some offense going early for the 49ers. The junior point guard scored seven points in the first 1:45 but Washington answered with five points by Justin Holiday in the first four minutes to hold a 55-38 lead.
Washington stepped up its game beyond the arc in the second half. After making just 4-of-13 from 3-point range in the first half, the Huskies canned five of their first six in the opening 8:15 of the second half to push the lead to 19. Wilcox knocked down a pair, while Gaddy and Darnell Gant had one each.
Playing without Anderson, Long Beach State could never get back in the game falling behind by as many as 31.
