RIVERSIDE-- UC Riverside (8-16, 2-3 Big West) scored four times in the seventh inning to even their three-game series with No. 9-ranked Long Beach State (18-10, 1-1 Big West), winning 6-4 on Saturday afternoon.

LBSU had an opportunity to tie it in the ninth, but centerfielder Carl Uhl tracked down a ball in deep right centerfield, for the second out, before closer Joe Kelly got another fly ball to end it, to give him his first save of the year. Travis Howell had singled with one out prior to Jonathan Jones' flyball to center.

Matt Larkins (4-1), who gave up four runs early to LBSU, pitched 7.2 innings for the wins, giving up four runs on eight hits. He gave up just three hits after LBSU took a 4-2 lead in the third.

Vance Worley (3-2) took the loss, giving it over to the bullpen in the seventh with a 4-2 lead after three-straight singles. Jason Markovitz came on, struck out the next two, before Ryan Goetz singled up the middle to tie it at 4-4. A two-run double by Aaron Wible then made it 6-4 off of reliever David Roberts

The Dirtbags scored three times in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead. An RBI double by Shane Peterson scored two after the ball got away from the cutoff man to give LBSU the lead at 3-2, before a sacrifice by Jason Corder made it 4-2.

Worley gave up six hits over the first two innings as UCR led 2-1 early and finished by giving up five runs on 12 hits over 12-plus innings.

The finale of the three-game series will be on Sunday at 1 p.m.
