Riverside Takes Series Over LBSU

RIVERSIDE-- Paul Bargas (1-3) won for the first time this year, pitching a complete game five-hitter in leading UC Riverside (9-16, 3-3 Big West) to the series win over No. 9-ranked Long Beach State (18-11, 1-2 Big West), 7-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Bargas, who came in with an ERA of 6.23, allowed just one hit over the first five innings, striking out five and walking three on the day. Carl Uhl had three hits today and nine hits in the series for UCR.
Shane Peterson got the first hit off Bargas in the fourth and hit a solo home run to make it 6-1 in the sixth.
The Dirtbag bullpen did not give up a hit from the five-run third inning for UCR until the eighth, when Bryan Shaw gave up one run on three hits for his first run of the season.
Jake Thompson (1-3) did not get out of the third inning as UCR scored five times in the inning to lead 6-0. Thompson left with two runners on, while trailing 4-0, and reliever Dustin Rasco gave up two more base hits, as part of a six-hit inning, to make it 6-0.
Thompson gave up six runs on seven hits over 2.1 innings.
The team's season-long, 10-game road trip concludes on Tuesday at Loyola Marymount at 3 p.m. LBSU has lost eight of nine on the road swing.
