LONG BEACH-- Shane Peterson drove in six runs, which included a grand slam as part of a seven-run seventh inning, to lead No. 7-ranked Long Beach State (12-3) to a 16-9 win over visiting USC (9-8). It is just the second time in school-history and second time in three seasons LBSU has swept the Trojans in a three-game series.
Jonathan Jones drove in the game-winning run for the second straight game. After the game-winning hit yesterday in the eighth, his RBI single, after eight pitches in the seventh made it 10-9. RBI singles by Espinosa and Jason Tweedy followed to make it 12-9.
Peterson then launched a grand slam to center field to make it 16-9 off of Hector Rabago (0-2), who gave up all seven runs in the inning. Peterson went 3-for-6, while John Hill drove in three early runs and Danny Espinosa went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Jason Tweedy had three hits as well, part of a season-high 17-hit attack.
The Dirtbags took leads of 4-0 and 8-2 early, before USC answered with a five-run sixth and two more in the seventh to tie it at 9-9.
David Roberts (2-0) pitched a scoreless seventh for the win, prior to Nick Vincent's two perfect innings to close out the series.
LBSU took a 4-0 lead in the first paced by a RBI doubles from Jason Corder and Taylor Krick to make it 2-0, before a two-run single by Hill doubled the lead. An RBI single by Peterson made it 5-0. An RBI triple by Espinosa in the fourth then made it 6-0. A sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Steve Tinoco extended the lead to 8-2 in the fifth.
Ryan Cook lasted just four innings, giving up the first six runs, before Jeff Grijalva gave up two runs in the fifth.
The Trojans would then score five runs, of which only one was earned, to close to within 8-7, as an error by right fielder Jason Corder allowed the inning to continue. Three relievers in the seventh allowed USC to tie it at 9-9.
The Dirtbags continue their season on Tuesday by hosting San Diego State at 6:30 p.m., before playing at UCLA on Friday and hosting the Bruins in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
